Well I picked up Suikoden V on Friday. I was excited to see how they could've possibly atoned for the horrid Suikoden 3 and 4 nightmares. I load up the game and it's slow going at first (as you may well have read in current reviews on GameSpot) but as you get more and more into the game, you feel like the game is just more and more going back to it's roots. And once you've been playing it into the 'teen hours you realize Konami has regained it's brilliance and brought it with Suikoden V. I literally found myself playing this game overnight because I was so into the story and it compelled me to play on.
The characters all have their own personality, development and even clashing persona in another. The battle system is back with 6 party battles with the introduction of different formations. This I would have to say would be the Cake. Seeing as you have 108 stars of destiny in this game, yet in 3 and 4 you were stuck with 3 party battles and you didn't get to use any of your SoD much in the others. What I love about the 6 man battle system is using everyones abilities and being able to combine certain whits and skills to a degree to fabricate a strong attack formula. The real icing on the cake was the return to freedom. The world map STRONGLY resembles Suikoden 1 and 2's world map freedom of roaming. I could go to places I could never go to without first completing a checkpoint in 3 and 4. Given I could get past monsters in the area.
The only sore spot the game gives me is the Encounter rate. While it's always evident in RPG's.... the encounter rate would be bearable if it didn't take 3-5 seconds to load up a battle because of the flashy screen that breaks into it. No more glass breaking or your cliche screen effect to transition into a battle.... this game takes 3-5 seconds give or take a few to show you a flashy and stunning view of light rays.... Although beautiful... picture going through that in a dungeon... And the game must load for another 3 seconds after the battle. So I can take the loading after the battle but seriously... I don't need a preamble to be so exstravagant.
But that is my ONLY qualm. The story is compelling, the character development is rich, and although the Hero looks femmy... I find myself wanting to be in his place (AGAIN.... as I have with past Hero's in Suikoden). Past characters make their DEBUT ... only because this is the prequel to Suikoden 1.
OVERALL.... I love this game. This game deep down, bottom line kills 3 and 4 and the franchise has once again replenished my passion for the series. If your a Suikoden fan and have been waiting for Konami to wake up and smell the coffee, then V is your game. This game will bring you back to the old school Suikoden as well as introduce you to new things that you'll appreciate.

.....I just now.... met Flik and Odessa..... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
