And I'm sure that you already know about this site, but if you ever want more fonts, it's a great site to use: http://www.dafonts.com

And sometimes I get jaggies when I save it as a gif, and sometimes I dont. :( I usually just play it safe and go with .jpg.

For most signatures, you'll want to save it as a JPEG. For simple ones with solid colors, GIF will be fine and it's not as big a file.

The reason you get those jagged areas when you're saving it as a gif is because the gif format is only capable of displaying 215 colors. That means any image with gradients or more than 215 colors is going to be simplified when saved as a gif, resulting in having a jagged, not as good looking picture. Even though those signatures you made look like they don't have many different colors, there's actually thousands of different shades of blue and black. So the the computer decided to cut out the varying shades of black and gray on your font, giving it a jagged bit-like look.

JPEG, however, can store thousands of colors. So for complex images like yours, JPEG is better.

With simple signatures like mine, GIF is better becuase it can actually distinguish the few colors present better. If I used JPEG, everything would've blended more giving it a less sharp look.

However, when using JPEG, you sacrafise the ability to have transparency effects like Null's Sonic creation above. It just depends on what's most important to you.

he does use jpg, i said to use gif instead of coloring the section he wants invisable.

However you did bring up a point that i forgot to mention. usually when i make a gif to have transparent section. its outlined in black, which gives it a smoother look on the transparent edge.

Also, what program are you using? there should be no reason a gif should look sharper then a jpg, in most cases they should look exactly the same.

If you could fix the rough edges, I think the one without the full box looks better.

The only thing I don't like about it is that the render on the left looks like a low quality render. :(

And unless they have a really long username, the signiture might look awkward with all that space in the middle.

And GM, I think Null is right...jpg and .gif files should look exactly the same. A jpg shouldn't blend more. And I don't really have to sacrifice the cool transparent effects...I could just do what I always do: save it as a .jpg and use the same background color as the message board. :D

The only time I use .gif's is when I make a sig like Ginkasa's...because you have to use a .gif to make use the cool video clips.

And by the way Ginky...I desperatly need to remake yours. The bg and the font looks horrible. I made that back in my beginner days.

It's a very minimal difference that would only really matter if it was your profession or something. So minimal, that it's not really visible.

Hmm...okay, look at example three at this site:

.

it would if i left it like that. that took me 5min. i was just seeing which setup looked better on the boards.
i already have a finish on sonic for the left looking smooth. as i said. black outline does that for ya.

and GM, all that depends on quality of the compression for a jpg. you didnt mention the compression or settings on the jpg before. makes a difference.

Another good question:
Why don't you?

And Vampyr... your graphic design has improved very much since I was last here! Good job with the brush-finding.

Thanks. :) And practice makes perfect, I suppose.

Or perfect practice makes perfect.

And there is a skull in my sig? Well I'll be damned.

lets counter act thoes skulls by putting the great monkey skull in our sigs!

BTW, hows this one look for the transparent section? i added curves to the box corners.

and i know theres still some jagged edges, thoes would be fixed a bit later.

I think it looks great.

Null 02-11-2005 06:12 PM

Re: Signiture & Avatar Display

so you think doing it that way would be better then the full box version?

Vampyr 02-11-2005 06:16 PM

Re: Signiture & Avatar Display

Yeah, I like the one without the full box better. What would it look like if you moved the picture of sonic to the left slightly, so that his arm came down and covered up the edge of the banner? That way sonic himself becomes the left hand border of the signiture.

Null 02-11-2005 06:18 PM

Re: Signiture & Avatar Display

thats what i had it do the first time. i didnt really like it as much. like this where you can see the edge behind him gives it more of the appearence he's walking into that box or infront of it. it didnt quite have that feel when you couldnt see where the box started.

What do you guys think about this sig? It's my first abstract piece.

"All the Fun of the Fair"

(if someone wants this, I can easily change the username. Just credit me. :p)

Looks nice but have you tried a shade brighter of blue? Seems too dark with a dark'ish red/black background

not sure about the blue on red. but i like the background. feels like its missing something tho. lines or some sort of flair to set it off. dunno.

but as i said. like the background. that looks slick

Vampyr 02-14-2005 07:15 AM

Re: Signiture & Avatar Display

Yeah, everyone I've shown it to hates the blue on red, but I can't think of a better way to do the text...do you have any recommendations?

And what sort of "flare" do you think I could add to it? Samething that becomes the focal point, but I'm not sure what. It would be cool if I coudl make one of the dark spiral things 3 dimensional or soemthing.

Null 02-14-2005 09:54 AM

Re: Signiture & Avatar Display

you know what i'd try... a kinda transparent white text, with a bold, dark red outline.

and flair, somtimes is something simple as putting a line across it, or vertically, or something simple that just adds to it. i think it would be pretty cool to find some sort of picture drawn in graffiti, hehe. but i dunno. usually just takes playing around with untill something works.

GameMaster 02-14-2005 03:43 PM

Re: Signiture & Avatar Display

The best possible color to use for the text would be green since red and green are complementary colors. There is a chance that you would get a 'Christmasy' look to it if you did that though. If it doesn't work, try using a lighter green or darker green. Or you can use the standard green and alter the shade of red.

Vampyr 02-14-2005 05:13 PM

Re: Signiture & Avatar Display

I think I'm going to try the white text...or I'll try a black text with a red outline, or visa versa.

And I can't add any renders...I'm wanting this to be very abstract, using only filters and brush's.

Null 02-14-2005 06:45 PM

Re: Signiture & Avatar Display

testing.....

dont even know why im doing this. i dont want a sonic sig. lol.

[edit] hmm. need to get rid of some of the black on left and smooth it out...

Vampyr 02-14-2005 07:51 PM

Re: Signiture & Avatar Display

I'm still not liking the render on the right. :( It just looks a little low quality.

And GM, I originally had a green font, but like you said, it was too Christmasy.

I redid the text on some of my sigs. One of my friends on GameSpot pointed out why all my fonts were jagged...I never knew this before, so check out the new products:

Hey Null, do you think you could make a Knuckles sig? Or perhaps a Zero Sig from Megaman?

Perhaps I would like it?

I dont know. I'm fond of this DFA sig, and of my FFXII/FFVII sig.

tis supposed to tho. its part transparent, doubled and the lower layer blured.

i dont want it looking sharp. its not supposed to be a focal point.

but perhaps i'll tinker with it a bit more.

and ya typh, which would you prefer i try first?

Either or, It doesn't really matter to me.

I was going to fix that FF sig for you, but I lost the .psd file.

So I have to recreate the whole thing to edit it.

I have no idea what that means...but all I know is I have the Sig saved on my computer...if that helps you in any way, let me know.

Vampyr 02-14-2005 09:59 PM

Re: Signiture & Avatar Display

Nah, that doesn't help. The .psd file is the one with all the layers and stuff...basically what I can use to change minor things without altering the whole picture.

Gotta tell ya Typh, if you dont use this one i might. i REALLY quite like this one....

oh and vampyr, what was it that was making the text jagged? i was going to ask you if you had the AA off or something, but i didnt see an option for that on text.

Typhoid 02-14-2005 11:12 PM

Re: Signiture & Avatar Display

Wow man...thats really good actually.

After the DFA phase passes, I'm using that for a while.

I'm hoping to collect a stockpile of sigs so i can change them ever few months, or month or so.

But that kicks ass, + rep is in order.

Null 02-14-2005 11:14 PM

Re: Signiture & Avatar Display

I had a script, that you put all the sigs in a folder on a website, and instead of linking to the picture for your sig, you link to the script and it randomly shows a new sig in that folder every time you refresh the screen.

was thinkin bout finding that again. dunno where i put it. lol

That's exactly what was wrong with it. I had the aa set to "none".

And I really like the Knuckles sig.

Re: Signiture & Avatar Display

Since I'm the resident signature maker here, I'll see what I can whip up for everyone.

And Null, if the script you speak of would allow for a set of images to be randomly assigned to the spot in my signature each time it is viewed, I would gladly pay doubloons and reputation for a copy of the script... :)
