umm they're near the lights i think... i "fiddled" with the wires conjoining the lights to the motherboard. i dont think this has anything to do with the fact my computer doesnt turn off but... any advice on how to put either of these problems right would be appreciated.

I'll try to ask my roomate if I get a chance today. Also, is your avatar a copy of a message you get or is it just something clever you found? I assume it is the latter, but if not, it may be useful.

It sounds like the connectors from the case/lights on the case going to the mobo aren't hooked up the correct way. Best way to fix that is to open the case, if you have the mobo manual with you, follow the picture diagram to correctly hook the wires back up.

I think it would be great if your computer were unfixable because it would teach you not to "fiddle" with things you know nothing about.

Was this desire to "fiddle" brought on by boredom or is A.D.D. your excuse for any mistake you make?

There is a patch on the MS website. I used it, but it didn't really work, however it may help you.

I'd recommend upgrading your OS.

Bobcat beat me to it. I was just to recommend you to that windows 98 patch. I recall having a somewhat similar problem on my old computer, and that patch fixed it right up.

Lol, that will teach you not to fiddle with wires unless you know for sure what you're doing.

Do you have any USB devices plugged in? I've heard several people say that sometimes XP has trouble shutting down when it has certain USB devices plugged in. (I know that in saying this, I invite a multitude of MAC users to bash XP, but I had to say it because it's true).

I had that problem a while ago with my keyboard, I just used the PS/2 adapter that came with it and it shut down just fine. Also, one of my friends said that MS had a patch for this problem. I never looked because I fixed it before I had a chance to.

lol I remember going to the Windows XP launch and they were saying how compatible it is with USB. The guy plugged in like 8 or 9 USB devices simultaneously and there was no crash, and they all jumped up and down and stuff..................but he didn't shut it down :hmm:

I can't even think of 5 USB devices that I would need plugged in at once.

The mouse and keyboard don't really count because they're necessities that everyone uses.

You can get an all-in-one printer/scanner/copier/fax.

The camera only needs to be plugged in for a second to load the pictures and then you remove it.

As for external CD-ROM drive and hardrive, only the mediocre/bad ones still use USB, good ones use Firewire.

And so does the iPod.

i had the exact same problem, i never fixed it tho. I would always just hold the power button for 5 seconds then my comp turned off and i did that for about a year... after the first month of doing it i disabled scandisk cuz it was annoying :)
