Re: Last movies you saw
Got a couple in!
Kick-ass: Hilarious. Awesome violence. Hilarious story. I highly recommend. Lone Wolf and Cub: Based off the manga of the same name, it's a pretty long series of movies and this is the first one. It's old, it's cheesy, but still entertaining. |
Re: Last movies you saw
Hitchcock's Rear Window (again). 8/10, maybe 9/10.
|
Re: Last movies you saw
I love Rear Window! Just saw Rope for the first time. It was good....
The Odd Couple with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, such a good old comedy. Haven't seen it since I was a grom. The Man Who Wasn't There - Good Coen movie, a b&w darky. Summer Wars - Fucking cool |
Re: Last movies you saw
Return Of The Joker
I think this might be my favorite Batman thing ever. Even better than I remember it being. Moon Seriously messed up but very enjoyable. Glad I didn't know the premise going in. |
Re: Last movies you saw
last movie I saw Event Horizon....gives me the chills every time I see it....
|
Re: Last movies you saw
Clash of the Titans. 6.5/10. Quite entertaining if you just sit back and watch. Pretty girl, I was pretty sure I knew her, but apparently I'd never seen her before in a movie.
![]() Perhaps she resembles a famous actress... anyone? |
Re: Last movies you saw
She was the woman in Quantum of Solace that got suffocated by being covered with oil and having it forced into her lungs.
I can't remember for the life of me what her name is though. |
Re: Last movies you saw
Her name's in the pic url: Gemma Arterton.
|
Re: Last movies you saw
Yeah I looked her up on IMDb. I've never seen any movies she's in.
Now that I see her again, she might look like someone I know in real life. WHAT AM I WAITING FOR!?! |
Re: Last movies you saw
Survive Style 5+
Quite possibly the greatest movie ever made. |
Re: Last movies you saw
"A Japanese quite unlike any other"
Because... instead of amazingly weird, this one's amazingly absurd? |
Re: Last movies you saw
I've been meaning to see Survive Style 5+ for a while now.
I watched Sharkskin Man and Peach Hip Girl about a month ago. It's a quirky, dark-comedy Japanese movie that has the late 90's exploit feel. I'm getting Ping Pong(2002) right now. Heard it's good. Finally watching Once Upon a Time in China(91) It feels a lot like Fearless. Harry Brown(2009) - Michael Caine, usual good. Not the most original, but plenty of vigilante films make that difficult. and SUMMER WARS. Seen it twice now cuz it's so damn good. I loved the family nuances. It kind of made sense to have a virtual world where office work gets done, school, etc. Cuts down on transportation costs yo |
Re: Last movies you saw
Iron Man 2. It was good. Not as good as the first, but it was entertaining and not as bad as some reviews would have you think. Basically, there are just a couple of scenes that don't really play off as well as they were probably hoping, but everything else is what you'd hope for.

Re: Last movies you saw
The Godfather part 1 and 2. The 3rd will follow soon.
1 was better than 2. Partly because in the second, I didn't follow everything that was going on. And now I understand how Robert De Niro (is that a Dutch name?) could play the father of Al Pacino. |

Thirst
Probably my best vampire viewing experience after Let The Right One In (in terms of realism). Dunno how well known this is, but it's by the director of Oldboy (and the rest of the revenge trilogy). Not the best I've seen from him but still a pretty good film. Stars the main actor of The Host as a Catholic priest who becomes a vampire. |
Re: Last movies you saw
The Godfather Part III.
Better than the 2nd part. The next generation of the Corleone family was what really made this movie. |
Re: Last movies you saw
Ping Pong It's a pretty good japanese pinppong movie. Not super fast paced, you know the type. I recommend.
The Fall (2006) Feels a bit Pans Labrynth, kid storybook type of movie. Some cool frames and scene shiftees. |
Re: Last movies you saw
Not really a movie but a mini series:
Children of Dune. 7/10. Nice if you read Dune, but don't want to read the sequels. |

The Princess and the Frog Sadly disappointing. Pretty bland story and no memorable songs. Quite liked the villain though. Wish there was more of a focus on him and the voodoo aspects. |
Re: Last movies you saw
Quick Change - Bill f'ing Murray! How had I not seen it sooner? Underrated since I've never heard of it. Nothing too serious, just some really gold moments.
Valkyrie - Passable, not too bad actually for what it was doing. I felt like a good portion of the takeover could've have been shot differently, especially with the SS but whatever right Chaw (2009) - Korean monster movie. Kind of in the vein of Host, but not nearly as good. I still watched the entire thing though. Giant. Wild. Boar. Thirst - Was a decent vamp flick. There were a few really well done scenes. I liked how she would barefoot it n such. Dunno how much I actually liked the movie. Maybe it was the two oldboy leads that could've done so much more besides tiptoeing along the many V cliches, either adhering or not. I would've liked something more,,, engaging....than the multiple unnecessary sex scenes. The Jerk - I'd avoid. A few good laughs but early Steve Martin is no Bill Murray. The Rock - Michael Mann trash. I'm probably the only one who had yet to see this....Nic Cage didn't help much. The entire premise...a bit dumb, dumbed but with Mannish polish. I'd avoid if you have a particular dislike for the formulaic. Maybe it's aged poorly against the last 15 years of marine hostages, terrorist threat, Cage yelling skitz devices. |
Re: Last movies you saw
Adventureland
Pretty, ehh...all around. I thought I might like this one, but I didn't. The cast is not bad (Martin Starr, Kristin Wiig, Jesse Eisenberg), but the script (+Ryan Reynolds) just kind of bugs me. Maybe a (6/10) |

Re: Last movies you saw
lol yeah Michael Bay. dunno how
Angrist: you answered, but the Chaw movie is kind of a low budget thing. The boar's about the size of two grizzly bears. I wouldn't bother with it in case you were wanting a monster movie. The Happiness of the Katakuris - A comedy from Miike. I laughed my ass off the first viewing, but I was intoxicated. It's gruesome, but not really. If you've seen Ichi the Killer this is polar opposite tameness. Takeshi Kitano has a new film that just showed at Cannes. Outrage. I'm looking forward to it, mostly because while I hate a lot of serious yakuza films, kitano's are in their own realm of cool. Sometimes the violence and darkness are a bit much, but he makes you feel the characters and combines it with expert filmmaking. See Hana-bi for one of his less violent yakuza films. Still really good, methodically slow stuff that works. Beat knows how to burst violence so it matters. And in case someone here hasn't seen it yet, The Warriors (1979). Just sayin, it's fucking awesome ambience. edit: twitchfilm.net Found some interesting films on his review list that I'm getting now. I wish I could find Symbol(2009). |
Re: Last movies you saw
Ok. I might see The Chaw one day. I also discovered that I meant D-War. I saw some minutes of it on youtube, it's definitely eye candy.

How to Train Your Dragon
Damn fine movie. |
Re: Last movies you saw
Mission Impossible
Nostalgia. Although I think MI3 came out when I was a freshman in college...or maybe it was senior year of high school. Can you believe J.J. Abrams directed MI3? Mission Impossible is probably the best of the series, although that is currently pending since I will probably rewatch them all now. Still, the movie is pretty awful with cut-paste editing that does not quite fit together and makes the movie feel like a bunch of different parts that were poorly stitched together vs. a flowing story. And the special effects are AWFUL. The sense of speed on the train at the end of Mission Impossible is about as bad as the Disco Volante scene in Thunderball. :lolz: Here is a comparison: (around 1:40) Also, Tom Cruise has always been a fucking loony, I don't know how I didn't notice it in the past. |
Re: Last movies you saw
Yeah, those 2 scenes are pretty bad...

Re: Last movies you saw
Blood Simple
A dark comedy film noir. This film is great and shows a lot of early Coens potential. There's a lot of great cinematography and the cast is top-notch as usual for a Coens film. Surprisingly, there is a decent amount of horror type of shots. I'm not sure if those where intentional or just indicative of early film experience. Raising Arizona This is a weird film from the Coen's works that is maybe borderline dark comedy and theatrical circus. It still has some really fun camera work including the first-person motorcycle camera. A fun, quirky film in which Nick Cage manages to not annoy the viewer. |
Re: Last movies you saw
Sherlock Holmes
Quite enjoyed. Though my only prior Holmes experience was Young Sherlock Holmes (which scared the bejeezus out of me as a wee lad), Wishbone, and Neil Gaimon's Lovecraftization of A Study in Scarlet, A Study in Emerald. Methinks shall be picking up some of the books at my local libraritorium. |
Re: Last movies you saw
I read The Hound of the Baskervilles. Pretty good, suspenseful book. But don't be fooled by the action that the Sherlock Holmes movie has.
Being John Malkovich That was... weird. |
Re: Last movies you saw
Suspiria
Italian Horror movie that I was recommended to watch via Netflix. Pretty good. The acting wasn't great, but some of the death scenes were pretty well done. It was the last film made in Technicolor so it has a very strange look to it. The soundtrack is creepy and bizarre as well. Apparently they are plotting a remake starring Natalie Portman. Not sure how that will go. |

The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus:
I really enjoyed this movie. I like the fact it was entirely different from anything I've seen. But not only that but there isn't really anything magic about Dr. Parnassus' Imaginarium. It's just a door given to him by the devil to see who can get more souls. I liked that. While he was some legitimate magic prophet at some point, now he's a desperate old man who's getting on by getting souls for Tom Waits. I think it's definitely a solid rental. |
Re: Last movies you saw
Blindness 4/10.
What a horrible attempt at a movie. :( Even though it featured some great actors, they didn't act. The script must have been very low budget and the director (of City of God and The Constant Gardner, 2 good movies) must have been asleep most of the time. It's really a shame, because the concept for the movie is really great. When a infectious disease causes people to go blind, the infected are put together in an abandoned hospital. It's really interesting to see what the loss of sight does to people (walk around naked, forget about races...). The situation becomes critical when violent power relations start to emerge. Now the interesting thing is: there is 1 woman there who hasn't gone blind. This would make for a great movie, and the trailer gave the illusion it was. But alas. :( The dialogs were so painful, there were major loopholes that could have been easily avoided. Bah, I'm ashamed I've seen this movie. |
Re: Last movies you saw
Watched a couple Netflix horror recommendations over the weekend.
First was Eyes Without a Face, a French film from the early 60's. It was pretty good. Certainly creepy and at points downright brutal. Slow-paced and psychological. The general plot is kind of thin, but I liked it. Next was Onibaba (or The Devil Woman), a Japanese film from the early 60's as well. This was pretty awesome. It was kind of like a more psychotic and intense drawn out Twilight Zone episode, which is great. Interesting take on morality in the characters or a lack thereof. Also, if watching topless Japanese women sleeping/snoring wasn't a fetish for me before, it certainly is now. It's hypnotizing. |
Re: Last movies you saw
The Time Traveler's Wife. 6/10. Book was extraordinarily better.
