He was born in Gori, which is now in the Republic of Georgia.

err..it might have been renamed to gori, but wasn't he born in Stalingrad? which also happens to be where the Russians made their stand?

Stalingrad was (and is now) known as Volgograd. And you said "where the Russians made their stand", I assume that you're talking about the Russian Revolution, in that case, the city you're thinking of is Leningrad (now known as St. Petersburg). Georgia was part of the Russian Empire, but is now it's own Republic. I don't know why Stalin named Volgograd "Stalingrad", though.
