GC!

One of 3 good Dire Straits songs (the other two being Walk of Life and Money for Nothing.)

You get a shiver in the dark
It's raining in the park but meantime
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie double four time
You feel alright when you hear that music ring

You step inside but you don't see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down
Too much competition too many other places
But not too many horns can make that sound
Way on downsouth way on downsouth London town

You check out Guitar George he knows all the chords
Mind he's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing
And an old guitar is all he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing

And Harry doesn't mind if he doesn't make the scene
He's got a daytime job he's doing alright
He can play honky tonk just like anything
Saving it up for Friday night
With the Sultans with the Sultans of Swing

And a crowd of young boys they're fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
The don't give a damn about any trumpet playing band
It ain't what they call rock and roll
And the Sultans played Creole

And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
'Thank you goodnight now it's time to go home'
and he makes it fast whith one more thing
'We are the Sultans of Swing

Where's Sam Cooke? Where's Muddy Waters? Where's the Velvet Underground? They didn't even manage to get the best Beatles songs in. I would have added sweeter ones like "Something" or "In my Life". I know it's supposed to be opinion, not fact, but they do call it the "100 Greatest", not "Our 100 Favorite". And... The Carpenters?

And I love people who expect me to read things that weren't there when I posted.

Thanks for outdated list too. Like it matters anyway. This is soley VH1's top 100. Our's would all be different. :-o

Stonecutter 06-14-2003 10:01 PM

Yeah, that 100 best list is suckey too. I'm ok with Satisfaction beating the stairway, but not Respect. I wouldn't even call Respect a rock and roll song.

I second that.

TheGrimReaper 06-14-2003 10:39 PM

Hey, Romeo and Juliet is a good Dire Straits song.

Stonecutter 06-15-2003 02:22 AM

I was in the shower, of all places, when THE MOST glaring omission from the top 100 of the past 25 hit me.

THE RISING!

WTF?

I know it's only a year old, but come on, that song was pretty much the anthem of 9/11 and I don't think we need to make any statements on the impact of 9/11 on.....everything. How The Rising isn't in the top TEN is beyond me.

M&M in the top 10
The Rising not on the list.

HUH?

Joeiss 06-15-2003 03:40 PM

The rising? As in the... "come on up for the rising.. " that song? WTF... that song is horrible.
