I don't really care one way or the other, but why do you hate it so much? |

In particular, now that I've actually gone to E3, a number of new problems with the trade show have presented themselves to me. For starters, the show is an absolute ****ing madhouse, rife with bullsh*t. You are immediately captivated by all the glitz and glamour and amazing booths, but none of it even matters worth a damn because A) if you're there as a memeber of the press (which you should be) you have NO TIME to do ANYTHING but work, and B) there are so many games to choose from and so many god damn people to get in your way and create 2 hour lines to play them that you don't even bother doing so. E3 needs a total downsize. From what I can gather they're going to move the show to a smaller convention center, lighten up the booths (ie. a few games to play, not hundreds), and place more emphasis on the industry side of things (meaning they'll actually enforce the press-only access that it should have, and thin out the video game fans that are just there to play games). Also, this could make way for more individual events, where developers host their own gaming shows throughout the year, spreading out the massive pile of information that we usually get at E3. |
Re: No More E3
I liked E3..though it felt too cramped when I was there in 2005. Maybe the smaller event will do better.
|
Re: No More E3
I never got a chance to go. :(
But I did enjoy watching the live press conferences online and love the plethora of info. I wonder if this means Nintendo might bring back Spaceworld. |
Re: No More E3
It's cause they got rid of the booth babes.

Anyways, now we can all WAIT TILL SPACEWORLD! Hahaha. Good times. |
Re: No More E3
Gaming press should sooo pressure Nintendo into revitalizing Spaceworld now that E3 is being downsized :D
|
Re: No More E3
Food for Thought: Where would you like to see E3 relocate to? Maybe a different place each time as is done with the Olympics?

1. Nintendo and others are going to put more resources in it 2. A ****load more people are going to show up now. Poor PAX. :( I'll still go to it, though. :) |
Re: No More E3
I wouldn't mind seeing E3 back in Salt Lake City where it originally began.
Or better yet; E3 in Saskatchewan. I can dig it. |

Re: No More E3
From a marketing perspective, this is an atrocious move. HORRIBLE. In fact, I can't think of one logical reason from a business perspective why it should be scaled down. E3 is gaming's big event. Its a yearly showcase that garners the industry the closest thing to positive mainstream press that its likely to see in the near future.
Now, if the industry moves the dog and pony show over to another event, say PAX, and they concentrated on just internal industry issues at E3, that wouldn't be a bad move (but I already thought there was a convention like that). To just end the extravanza that was E3 without another outlet is just stupid. Flat out stupid. But I think you'll just see E3 with another name next year. |

You also have to consider the amount of pressure developers are put under to get games ready for presentation at the big show. Can you even imagine working for Bungie, having Microsoft breathing down your neck to get a presentable build of Halo 3 at E3? If E3 is downsized, publishers will have more money to spend on their own events, where they can receive full coverage of all their titles and not worry about bigger games overshadowing them. |
Re: No More E3
That all makes sense, DM, but I'm looking more at the big picture. I'm looking at a legislature drooling at the idea of regulating video games and using them a scapegoat for just about any social disorder or malady. I'm looking at an industry that is also prime to dominate traditional media entertainment in the next 10 years.
Whether publishers want to sell or compete is irrelevant. E3 was good for the entire industry and was a sole source of mainstream buzz and attention for it. But like I said, I still see E3 existing, but under a different name. Economic competition won't allow for such an important event not to exist. Big name publishers are still going to want to push their products at the expense of others. Now, instead of a large convention where all could join (even if at a lower level of exposure), you'll probably just see the giants still pump all the same money for more recognition, and create even more of a gaming ghetto for the smaller houses. |

I wonder if TGS will become the next alrge event. larger then it already is
|
Re: No More E3
Actually, TGS is suppose to be merging with Japan's two other largest entertainment trade shows. One is like gadgets and electronics, and the other is toys and anime I believe; can't remember what they're called. But anyway, it'll become one of the largest video game/electronics shows on the planet.
