The 2008 GameTavern Election: Runoff Election

Welcome to the 2008 GameTavern Election (for moderator of Happy Hour)!

The election will be a three step process:

1) Candidate declarations.
2) First election.
3) Runoff election between three top vote getters.

As you can tell, this is step three of the process. This is a private poll in which any active member is able to vote (including the candidates and current GT staff). Voting will be monitored by myself to make sure there is no voter fraud.

Before you vote, please look at the Candidate Q&A.

Voting ends Thursday at 6:00pm CT.

No offense to Aladuf, but why is he a contender? He's so new.

That's why he's a contender. He's fresh. He's new. He has no conflicts with anyone here. And if you read his Candidate Q&A, it has some optimistic, ambitious thoughts. Dare I call him the great, new hope?

You spend enough time posting here and you become predisposed to thinking small as its a small place. Which isn't a bad thing.

But Aladuf has the advantage of coming from a larger forum which gives him a perspective some here may not have.

We can't be sure yet whether his ideas will transfer smoothly to our smaller community, but I suppose its that state of uncertainty and venturing into the unknown which makes him such a wildly, attractive choice.

is anyone else drawing scary parallels between this and the actual presidential candidates?

Hardly. Elsewise Typhoid and I would be throwing underhandedly rude comments back and forth. :p

It seems as though this is quickly turning into a two man race.

Same to TML I guess. ;)

This time, i won't lie.
I totally voted for me. I need all the help I can get.
Plus, last time I voted for TML - so I shot myself in the foot.;)

I got to ask why? Is it a form of ancient Chinese honor to not vote for yourself?

It definitely sends mixed messages. I mean, here we have this guy who is choosing to run for this moderator election. And he gives some real good answers to the Q&A.

But if he wouldn't even vote for himself, why should anyone else?

That's why I extract from it anyways...

I don't think there's any shame in voting for yourself. If anything, it shows the voters you have self confidence.

thatmariolover 04-21-2008 11:51 AM

Re: The 2008 GameTavern Election: Runoff Election

Not really. I just figure if I win, it should be because other people voted for me and not because I voted for me. I think you should all know, I think I would make a great mod. But I answered the questions in the Q&A, so vote based on that and your personal experiences with me.

After reading that, I suppose you could see it as some warped sense of honor.

Re: The 2008 GameTavern Election: Runoff Election

I know this isn't a Q and A but I'm sure TML and Typ will check this thread often. :p

What do you think is the bigger issue at GT right now?
a)Lack of new members who remain
b)Lack of general activity

And how do you plan on working on both?

Typhoid 04-21-2008 06:43 PM

Re: The 2008 GameTavern Election: Runoff Election

Lately it's actually been a lot more active than it has been, and some "new" members have actually joined lately. Or come back. However you want to look at it.

Personally, we can't entice people to stick around here if we don't want to anymore than Dyne or Strangler can. I think that comes down to the forum itself, to have to be interesting enough to hook someone's eye long enough to interest them in the different members of the forum.

Activity increases as we get closer to the summer/end of the school year. Makes sense. Folks got more free time. More time to think.

But I do agree with most of what you are saying.
I was just thinking more in general terms of ideas.

Like I could be mistaken, but I don't think gameTAVERN has actually ever had like an alcohol thread. Granted, we use to skew MUCH younger but everyone has kind of grown up. And I'm sure there are a lot more things we don't talk about.

Hell, and this is just me personally. I think the last movie saw thread kind of killed one of the big things which werre actual movie discussion threads.

But we shall now wait for TML.

And Aladuf since he is till running.

That's big. We definitely need to move way from the "catch-all" threads to ones that are more specific.

Re: The 2008 GameTavern Election: Runoff Election

I think I answered this on AIM the other night, and in fact I've changed my mind since then.

I believe new members are more important at this point. Not because I think our current members are unimportant, but because it's obvious that they've found a reason to stay. Establishing new members and keeping them is key to getting new discussion going. So in the end, they're not exactly singular goals. I think new members and new discussion give current members a reason to keep coming.

As for accomplishing the goal, I'd go recruiting, as well as invite a few of my friends that might be interested. On top of that, I would be prepared to work on an incentive/competition based system to reward referrals better.

Edit: As for an Alcohol thread, it might be fun to have a 21 and over board. Regulating it would be the problem, and I'd prefer to avoid babe threads. But it would give us a fun opportunity to talk about new stuff we'd tried.

Why a 21 and over board?
Minors talking about booze is illegal?
Not to mention there are a lot of Canadians here, and the drinking age ranges from 18 to 19.

Fair point. Leave it to the American to forget the rest of the world exists. :D

I guess it just was natural for me to think it would be best to keep stories of drunken misadventures private. I don't really like glorifying drinking to minors as it's a good way for them to get in trouble.

Well maybe we could have a mentor program where an older member 'adopts' a younger, misguided member. And we could help answer any confusing questions they might have about growing up and bodies going through change.

Anyhow more questions since still haven't made up my mind.

Typhoid how is your Canadaness not a weakness?
TML how does not being Canadian make you so much more awesome?

:D

What are your thoughts on giving certain members forums to spotlight their own ideas? What I mean is like a weekly thread devoted to one member who can share their interest or music or taste in movies or anything really. Sort of a way to get to know other members.

As it stands and probably not the best example, I didn't vote for anyone.

Anyways, way to go TML, don't screw it up or you'll forever be forgotten in the ranks of the internet moderators.

There's only a few of them out there, right?
