New Style Survery

I've begun some work on a few new style(s), but before I go any further I'd like to hear what everyone would like:

- Would you like a new style or is having just this one fine?

- If you would like a new style, what would you like it to look like?

- Would you like the Wine Red style to make a triumphant return?

Re: New Style Survery

I say go all out, make it count. Go for a new style.

I have no idea what the new style should look like.. maybe just an updated "fancier" version of what we have now?

I'm too new to know about the "Wine Red style" :(

Bube 05-28-2008 02:19 PM

Re: New Style Survery

The little icon which helps you find your posts - it should be on every post. :p

And even if we have wine red, I should still be able to choose something else - wine red hurts my eyes.

Re: New Style Survery

I like the current style, but a change could be nice.

Let's further emphasize the Tavern theme with the new style.

I enjoyed wine red way back when, but I think I would prefer it to stay a happy memory.

Go with a light background and darker text. Its been proven in marketing studies to be more readable and appraochable. It might help us grow the forum.

Maybe wood color that reminds us of a real tavern. I don't think that will work.

Renwood 05-28-2008 04:35 PM

Re: New Style Survery

Themes that attempt to emulate textures look busy. Strong, matte, minimalist colors are best.

Re: New Style Survery

The "Beta Style" is now available for selection from the bottom left of your window. Please play around with it for a bit and tell me what you like and dislike. Also, the top image is simply a place holder.

Aladuf 05-28-2008 05:50 PM

Re: New Style Survery

Dude, Bond. This beta version is fucking slick! I like it a lot.

A couple things though, me and Jim were talking about it... is there a way you can get rid of the stars under the name (they seem to not serve much of a purpose) and maybe lose the post count thing (I don't care for it but if others like it then that's fine).

Merely suggestions, if people disagree then say so, I was just thinking out loud.

Otherwise though, like I said.. very VERY nice.

Bond 05-28-2008 06:05 PM

Re: New Style Survery

You get a star for every 1,000 posts. That might be a little outdated though.

I'm going to have to edit the postbit on this style to include what you're currently playing and if you're online or not.

Renwood 05-28-2008 06:07 PM

Re: New Style Survery

The text on the quick-reply box for "Beta" ("Decrease Size, Increase Size, Swith Editor Mode) could use some reducing. It expands the box quite a lot.

In terms of layout and readability, I think it is a marked improvement. Did the theme not include a package of custom images? I notice that the quote, post reply, and new message icons are all from the default vBulletin theme. If it didn't come with custom buttons, some more tailored to the theme coloring/style would make the theme pop nicely. I used to customize skins for forums, but I haven't in a long time. If no one else is jumping up to it, I could try again though. Cannot promise anything mindblowing, but they'll be at least a serviceable effort.

Of course, if there is a similar theme that includes a ready-made suite of custom buttons, it'd probably just be better to go with that. :P

User levels are take them or leave them. I made these for my old forum:

Admin

Mod

As long as they're simple, fit the theme(s), and aren't the same graphics as everyone else, they can be good.

Bond 05-28-2008 06:10 PM

Re: New Style Survery

I edited the style from the default vB style, so that's why it's all the default vB buttons.

I'm definitely going to look into a more fitting button set, or if you could find or make one that would be awesome.

Renwood 05-28-2008 06:14 PM

Re: New Style Survery

I used to know some good sites for free pre-made vBulletin themes that could look quite nice. I'll see if I can find them again.

I really liek the Beta version, slick. The big Red GT banner needs to be changed though, doesnt go with the green.

Yeah, I'll be making one tonight or tomorrow, whenever this style starts to take its final form. :D

Wow, this style is pretty cool.

Takes some time getting used to. I feel so out of place without the Fusion style, like going to work without clothes on.

How the hell do you form a tightly-knit community with that many people?! Props to Jim and Aladuf if they've managed to stick around there longer than a month.

BreakABone 05-28-2008 07:39 PM

Re: New Style Survery

I think we are trying to stay away from it, but maybe replace the green with a soft blue like powder or sky. See how that does.

Make the background a darker shade of white (I know sounds weird)

It's not and you don't. It's for a different kind of experience. It's like cramming an entire frozen turkey up your ass (in a good way). As opposed to here, where you have a nice, thinly sliced turkey half-sandwich

every alternating Thursday

Re: New Style Survery

Don't try over-do it by adding all these new doodads and whatnots just because the look is new.

You don't/shouldn't change the layout, in order to change the colour scheme.

I personally like it how it is. I'm fond of the black and green.
A lighter forum board to me looks unfinished, and uncared for. Since gray/light blue is the standard forum board colour.

Maybe some shades of black, with a tinge of brighter green opposed to the forest green there is now.

Bond 05-28-2008 08:36 PM

Re: New Style Survery

The new style is radically different than this one. Of course both would be selectable, but I do wonder if it's a problem to have two such different styles.

- Fix multi-quote
- Fix quick reply
- Fix post bit
- Darken background color

Re: New Style Survery

style changes always mess with me cause i get used to one and then i dont know whats going on.

and another plus for fusion, the top of each post's box looks phallic. vote we change name from fusion to "boner jams"

Bond 05-28-2008 09:33 PM

Re: New Style Survery

I fixed all the major issues.

I do realize we have to change the top banner.

If a few people could use this style and tell me if they run into any problems that would be great.

On a side note, the new colors really bring out William F. Buckley Jr.'s eyes :)

It's not really tight-knit at all. It's in no way anything like this (and that maybe why I come here more now). I've been there for about a year, Jim and BaB's have been there FAAAAAAAR longer than me.

I agree with everything here, give it a darker white and ditch the olive color. It feels to... plain.

And Bond, so far no technical problems though.

I like these colors. They're light, but not blinding, and flat, but not boring.

What Jim said, good colors there.

Here's my recommendation. PANTONE Reflex Solid-coated Blue C. Colour code: #000f89. It's just a step up from what I use for my dad's clinical sleep websites. I really like it.

Here's what it would be in action, quick and dirty in photoshop:

Renwood 05-28-2008 11:01 PM

Re: New Style Survery

little too blue imo; it makes the gray look grayer than it really is; it would work as the main heading color, but those lighter dark grey subheadings should be some shade of blue that corresponds. Gradients daddy

Re: New Style Survery

:lolz: I thought that was a print screen of GAF. It's nice, I love the style.

Renwood 05-28-2008 11:10 PM

Re: New Style Survery

Logo would benefit from something more simple. In Fusion, it is integrated into the existing theme, and the logo graphic itself is small and loads quickly. It also fits to most resolutions and window sizes without stretching easily.

I think this is generally the size to aim for, left justified. No background save whatever is behind it in the theme already; the coat of arms and the website name, plus a bit of witty text

Aladuf 05-28-2008 11:18 PM

Re: New Style Survery

Is there anywhere I can go to look for some icons or ideas for a new set up? I have a bit of *style* I like to think. And I'd like to see if I can attempt to scrape something together.

I totally thought of that after I did it, but I think the color scheme is the best... and most of us aren't GAFfers I believe so it wouldn't be too bad.

I like this for not being blue since most websites are blue.

edit: it can be downloaded from this link (you need to register an account): http://www.themesbydesign.net/forums...read.php?t=262

It is made for vB 3.6.x so it should be compatible.
