What determines Roman Numeral sequel-counting?
Ok, say a game comes out, and it's really good. And then the sequel comes out. What factors do you think affect the numbering scheme? In specific, why do you think they went with "Ninja Gaiden II" instead of "Ninja Gaiden 2"?
Is it purely a "me-too" kind of thing, trying to be like Final Fantasy? |
Re: What determines Roman Numeral sequel-counting?
I think it's because of the mature and epic theme.
Call of Duty wasn't much of an epic game (story wise) but God of War was, for example. |
Re: What determines Roman Numeral sequel-counting?
hmm Turok II or Turok 2?
So, this is why you're heading to the office today?! :D |
Re: What determines Roman Numeral sequel-counting?
No, not at Propaganda yet. :( Just website stuff for now.
And it spurred when I saw "Ninja Gaiden II", actually. :lolz: Seriously, do they think Ninja Gaiden is mature? |
Re: What determines Roman Numeral sequel-counting?
Using a numbers usually only caters to little kids games - because they won't really know how to read numerals.
Who knows. |
Re: What determines Roman Numeral sequel-counting?
Warcraft II, Warcraft III... Those fit because they're set in a medieval setting. But it also looks cool in Starcraft II...
I guess it just stands for mature, serious and maybe epic games. But it's not a guarantee. |

Or because they did roman numerals with the original NES Ninja Gaiden trilogy, so they're stickin' with it. |
Re: What determines Roman Numeral sequel-counting?
Well, the II in Ninja Gaiden works because the "II" is two blood slashes. It's hardcore.

Re: What determines Roman Numeral sequel-counting?
I think it's just a matter of preference on the side of whoever names it.

Re: What determines Roman Numeral sequel-counting?
A better question is how two games came out after GTA3 and the third game after was GTA4.
Its like the other two never existed.... |
Re: What determines Roman Numeral sequel-counting?
It's GTA IV. :p

Edit: Actually, even the Playstation version required you to own the original GTA, so it was more of an expansion pack... But... But even so.... What Jim said... Also, all the actual numbered games have taken place during the present day... Edit Edit: No... GTA2 supposedly takes place sometime in 2013... Hm.... Let's just say that the GTA series is special. |
Re: What determines Roman Numeral sequel-counting?
Isn't it because all the numbered versions happen in Liberty City?

The city is GTA2 doesn't have an official name. So no... GTA is just special... Or, as Jim says, it goes by game engine... |
Re: What determines Roman Numeral sequel-counting?
Here's the difference (About grand theft auto):
Grand theft Auto was set in 97ish, since that is the release, and no prior statement as to year was given. Grand theft Auto 2 was set sometime before 2000, yet after 97. Because there is a radio station where the host would make comments about the millenium coming, etc etc. So it was not 2013, or 2009 as people have just - for whatever reason - assumed. Grand Theft Auto 3, was set in early 2000/2001. Vice City, and San Andreas, were set in 1986, and 1992, respectively, and do not follow a linear timeline. Grand theft Auto 4, takes place in 2007/2008 - as to carry on the "future movement" of the game, thusly getting a number, and not a name. So timeline wise it is: GTA: London GTA: Vice City GTA: San Andreas Grand Theft Auto GTA II GTA III GTA IV |

The in-game radio stations say the millenium is coming, yet Rockstar itself created a little fake journal promotion dealie for the game that features entries dated from the year 2013... *ponders* But yes, every game with the possible exception of GTA2 (depending on if you want to believe the game itself, or the game's official promotional material) takes place at present day, in respect to each games' release date. And each game with an official number rang in a new game engine for the series. So it could be either or or neither or nothing or nonsense. What about other games with roman numerals? They're such fascinating figures... Why do we even use them at all anymore? *ponders* |
