Free PC headset at Buy.com with Google checkout

http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=204031277

It may not be the prettiest thing out there but if you need a headset for your PC then this seems to be a fine deal. Renwood and I just made our orders and got them for free.

Also, this can help if you were ever planning on being in the podcast but just didn't have a headset.

lol, oh and yes, it is a Halo 2 headset :p

The fact that its not USB is great too.

Wow, anything that's free is a whale of a deal!

That also means it can't work on Mac. :(

Er, yeah it can?

edit: or not. Hrm. I was pretty sure I've used mine before.

edit 2: I am unequivocally wrong and cry your pardon.

Yeah, headsets that aren't USB aren't mac compatible.

As I understand it, anything with a volume controller between the line and the headphones won't work on mac, because they usually need drivers and companies are lazy / it won't work. :(

I'm just glad I can use my Rock Band mic. That was a relief. :)

Yeah, I just read that. I thought I had used my regular mic before, but now I remember that I actually switched it out for my USB one before trying to talk.

My Logitech mic headset has a volume control dongle on the cord but its USB so it works fine.

Heh, I dunno, I've used Mac's but could never really get used to them. I always felt like they were trying to over simplify everything, and most programmers I know use Windows, just because it lets you mess with more things.

Thanks for the head's up Aladuf, got my free headset ordered last night. :)

Re: Free PC headset at Buy.com with Google checkout

I don't know. They're definitely different beasts, but even if they're simplified, I find a lot more use out of Macs. I love doing little things like programming Automator to do stuff for me rather than getting a java platform running before I can do anything. I mean it's Unix-based so it's not like it's useless. :)

I can't run DevC++ though.. I used to love that. :(

Considering mine crapped out recently and I'm strapped on money until I've moved out at the end of the month, this will be a good half-assed replacement until things stabilize.

Have you tried using Netbeans? It's an awesome, free IDE that you can use to write C, C++, Java, Ruby, Perl, and some other stuff. It looks like it's available for Mac OS X, I'm going to assume that that includes Leopard, right?

A lot of people swear by Eclipse, but I really hate that IDE. Netbeans is very suave though, so you might want to give it a look.

I actually use Eclipse and I always find things wrong with it. :lolz: Stupid Eclipse.

Netbeans does C++? Hmmm... that's all kinds of awesome. :D

Re: Free PC headset at Buy.com with Google checkout

It depends if your mac has an Intel or PowerPC processor.

Combine 017 06-22-2008 07:42 PM

Re: Free PC headset at Buy.com with Google checkout

2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

Re: Free PC headset at Buy.com with Google checkout

Then you can either partition your hard drive to dual boot OSX and Windows, or you can run emulation software.

If you have Leopard you can just run Boot Camp to partition. See here.

Im not fluent in Computer, dumb it down a notch.

Re: Free PC headset at Buy.com with Google checkout

Okay, you have two options.

Dual boot: Dual booting will require that you partition your hard drive (split your hard drive into two parts). One part will run OS X (Apple's operating system) and one part will run Windows (Microsoft's operating system). All you need to do is run the Boot Camp program (it's in Applications) and follow the instructions. Basically, you're going to steal some GBs from the Macintosh drive and put them into the Windows drive. You'll need a Windows install CD.

Emulation: Allows you to run Windows within OS X (so basically it runs as a program). It probably won't run as fast as compared to the dual boot option.

Click on the apple in the top left and go to "About This Mac."

Does it say 10.4 or 10.5?

Yeah, Boot Camp comes with Leopard.

There was a Boot Camp beta for Tiger, but I'm pretty sure it's discontinued.

Re: Free PC headset at Buy.com with Google checkout

Well then what would you say is a better plan, save up and buy a PC or buy Leopard for $130 or what ever it is. Does a Mac run windows just as good as PC does?

Bond 06-22-2008 08:11 PM

Re: Free PC headset at Buy.com with Google checkout

You can get Leopard for $110 on amazon.

If you go to a university you can get it for even cheaper. I got my copy of Leopard for $70.

Re: Free PC headset at Buy.com with Google checkout

Boot Camp is in the Utilities folder which is within the Applications folder. If you have Leopard, its in there. If you have Tiger, you'd have to install it. Which would require a search because its not provided on the Apple site anymore.

Edit: I see I'm a little late.
