Someone emailed this to my friend's Biology 152 lecture.

Dear Fellow 152 Students,
Hi, my name is Alex Glazer and I am a fellow student in your lecture (and maybe even discussion—lucky!). I, unfortunately, am not the best student in the class, nor am I the most diligent notetaker, especially during Dr. Bohannan’s unit. This entire semester I have tried to take notes but every time I have tried my irritable bowel syndrome acts up and I get horrible gut wrenching diarrhea.
Now you may be saying to yourself, “ I don’t believe this kid, why should I let him copy my notes?” Well let me tell you a story: Yesterday as I was walking into the library a homeless man approached me. This man introduced himself and told me a little about himself. He then asked me if I had any spare change. Since I do not typically trust the homeless I offered to buy him a sandwich at Subway instead. Not only did I buy it for him, but I let him come in with me, choose his toppings, and even get a footlong! If this isn’t enough for someone to send me their notes, I don’t know what is.
Thank you in advance for your help and I greatly appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Alex Glazer

I once offered to buy a homeless guy a meal and he said that that would be no good

I never give homeless people money, but when I have food on me, I offer them some.

Give the guy your notes, because he made up a fun story and had the guts to mail everybody. :)

Well. First I forgot my password so I couldn't log on, so I procastinated a bit and finally requested a new one, then my e-mail wasn't working for a few days so I diddn't get the password, then I changed computers since my e-mail wasn't working anyway, and by the time I had that all set I had forgot about it, so when Jeepnut told me about the mafia game I remember to look through my inbox for the new password.

And I shall read through the backlog of tavern tales as I get time. ;)

I just got this...

"I've sent you all an email before asking for notes for the film assignment as I was not able to attend class that day. Thankfully, a fellow student sent me the link to the video online so I was able to complete it. Now I find myself with another very serious issue...

As of about 40 minutes ago, my computer just blue-screened me. This has never happened before but apparently it's bad (I don't know much about computers). Nothing works and I can't access anything... It's all just blue. Not only can I not get to the study guide I've been preparing for the last few days, every bit of notes I had for the class were also on my computer, and therefore now cannot be used to draw up another guide. I AM FREAKING THE F*** OUT!!! I have the book, but other than that I am very screwed. I am studying in Beverly Hills with no way to return to campus until tomorrow, so I can't even study with anyone. If someone is willing to send me notes, or even better yet, a completed study guide, it would absolutely save my life. I know many of you have worked very hard to draw up your own study aids (as I had done the same) but I am hoping for some extreme understanding and help. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help an unlucky student out."

What should I do?

Tell him he deserves it for not taking notes with a pencil and paper.

Then forward the email to your teacher.

I'm curious as to what computer he is using to type of the message since his got blue screened, but wow I never realized people got that desperate around finals.

Due to lack of homeless story, ignore that.

Seconded.
Maybe if there was a puppy or cute kitten story, but he didn't even make that effort.

I would give him advice on how to get access to his hard drive without having to run Windows. Tell him to look up BartPE.

I don't think people shouldn't have to beg this much for other people's notes. We give each other our notes all the time..

Re: Someone emailed this to my friend's Biology 152 lecture.

Yeah same here, I don't really recognize that atmosphere... If you can't make it to a class, you ask a friend to take some handouts, or copy his notes. If you lost everything, you just ask a friend if you can copy his stuff. Big deal.

Unless you really don't have any friends I guess.

Re: Someone emailed this to my friend's Biology 152 lecture.

It's a 100 level class. It's very likely the guy doesn't have any friends in the class. If it was a 400, 300, or even 200 level class, then I'd agree.

Angrist 12-12-2008 04:39 PM

Re: Someone emailed this to my friend's Biology 152 lecture.

What's that level system?

manasecret 12-12-2008 04:53 PM

Re: Someone emailed this to my friend's Biology 152 lecture.

Generally, 100 is 1st year, 200 2nd year, 300 3rd year, and 400 4th year. Generally if there is a 200 level course, you are required to take the 100 level course before it or test out of the 100 course. Similarly, if there is a 300 level course, then you are required to pass the equivalent 200 level course before taking it, and the 100 before that.

So for example, Calculus III is designated as MATH 352, Calculus II as MATH 215, and Intro. to Calculus as MATH 101. The last two digits are arbitrary.

In many cases, though, once you get to the 3rd and 4th year, the courses aren't a direct progression from previous courses. For example, for electrical engineering, Overvoltage and Insulation Coordination may be designated EENG 412, but it's not as if there were three courses before it that led directly up to it. Instead, you are required to have a whole mix of courses completed before you are eligible to take that one.

Re: Someone emailed this to my friend's Biology 152 lecture.

Ah ok, thanks. Makes sense. :)
I guess we have a similar service, we just don't put that much emphasis on it. The course codes here look something like MAT-10406. The last 2 digits stand for the amount of credits, the first digit indicates the year or difficulty. That code would be an introduction to statistics. MAT-20406 is a direct follow-up. We don't have much of those at all. I don't think I've done one. We usually have courses that focus on 1 topic, so there's not much to follow up to.
