Modern Warfare 2

I don't want to get anyone's hope up too much, but the teaser website has launched

http://modernwarfare2.infinityward.com/

And I believe first footage is due this week.
As well as Mass Effect 2.

So I guess it was sooner than expected.

Interesting how they totally dropped the CoD name. :) It makes sense.

Edit: I also heard rumors about a Wii version. If they're smart, they'll make one.

Swimming mode enabled.
- A 'Stealthy' Oil pipeline Scuba Mission will be included in campaign mode.
- A level will definetly be based in Rio De Janeiro.
- Siberian Level will feature in campaign mode.
- Vehicles (e.g. Trucks, Tanks etc.) will be introduced into the Modern Era.
- A 'Helicopter Based' Level will be featured.
- An Oil Tanker level will also be featured.
- Ken Lally (Wesker from Resident Evil 5) will be voice acting. Most likely as a Russian villain.

More details and a new gameplay trailer will be revealed on May 24th

-No coop (for story)
-Special Forces mode, several missions in the spirit of Mile High Club (may have coop)
-More open ended gameplay
-No infinitely respawning enemies

Soap is in the game as a "grizzled vet" NPC.

Single player enemies will have "customized" weapons similar to the multiplayer component of COD4.

The ice mission shown to GI demonstrated the game's open-ended approach to combat, showing how stealth can be implemented if the player chooses.

While the gameplay is open-ended, the story is "on-rails".

Infinity Ward realizes that the "invisible line" where enemies will stop coming in COD4 wasn't great, so they're trying hard to eliminate that. Also, they are lengthening the single player past the 6-10 hour mark of COD4.

"Special Forces Mode" is a major part of MW2, a series of missions in the spirit of the Mile High Club from COD4. It will also have co-op in this mode. Gears-style bleed-out-and-partner-revive will be used.

Co-op apparently won't exist in Story Mode.

Riot shields will be implemented in the game.

Zakhaev's former associate, Makarov, is the "new face of global terrorism."

Snowmobiles are used as a form of escape in the demonstration. Unclear whether or not the player will drive, shoot, or both.

Players will alternate using the two triggers to climb ice-walls.

Movable turrets will be used in SF mode and Single Player, no official word on online use.

IW wants to implement an accomplishment system to online, as they want to make their players famous.

Online mode will use a "Live-Patching" system, where IW can manipulate spawn logic or certain parts of a multiplayer map without doing a full-blown patch.

Another demoed area shows an enormous desert setting where Task Force 141 drops into a wasteland and must navigate a "lengthy trek" to a fully-rendered valley with scattered caves, reminiscent of Iron Man.

IW is focusing on details for the COD4 sequel, citing iced-up tire treads in the Russian level.

The game will run in 60fps (duh).

And for the ladies,

Now this is how you do a special edition. Activision and Infinity Ward look to be going all out for its Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 "Prestige Edition," with not only the usual accoutrements like a special casing and an art book, but also what is described by Community Manager Robert "fourzerotwo" Bowling as a "fully functioning NVGs -- night vision goggles." No idea how well they work, but it's got alternating modes and MW2 branding. That's pretty awesome, but we gotta imagine it's gonna demand a pretty penny -- this is definitely more than that $80 "collector's edition" for $80 GameStop is currently listing

I hate the knife throwing. The game is about realism, all those little details that make get you feeling you're really in battle. But come on, knife throwing?! I can't see a Marine throwing knives at somebody.. It's a really stupid addition in my opinion..

Combine 017 09-05-2009 01:18 PM

Re: Modern Warfare 2

But Spec Ops are trained to throw knives, which is what you are in CoD(OpFor, Spetsnaz).

So it is a realistic addition. Practical? I dont know.
I wonder if the Spetsnaz will get the ballistic knife, now that would be awesome.

Bube 09-07-2009 02:42 PM

Re: Modern Warfare 2

Bah. I still think it doesn't fit the game.

Maybe in MW3 they could put in some acrobatic kicks and punches and stuff. Turn it into a Bond game.

I've never heard of throwing knives being used before. I've done some time, read a lot of books, and it's never so much as popped up. I would be surprised to find it as a part of any unit's standard training.

It's got Hollywood written all over it. COD4 has taken many liberties to make the game fun, and it shouldn't be considered real or accurate by any stretch of the imagination.

Combine 017 09-07-2009 10:32 PM

Re: Modern Warfare 2

From Wikiedia.
Quote:

Military personnel (usually spec-ops) seldom use "normal" knives for throwing, because lack of repeatability makes training and certification difficult. The French GIGN's knife has a liquid mercury vial hidden inside to help automatically orient the blade forward when thrown. The Soviet Spetznaz (special forces) throwing knife is actually a blade gun, which uses a very strong coil spring hidden in the handle to propel the blade forward on the press of a button. The holster carries extra blades, because hitting a tree or other wooden object embeds the blade so much, removal by human strength may be impossible.
They are used. Like I said, its not very practical, but they do use them.

Re: Modern Warfare 2

No, I'm just saying that isn't proof, and I think people need to accept that Wikipedia is not a factual source of information. Think of the people who edit Wikipedia, and wonder why it tends to be a good source of tech information. However, anything non-tech related such as military history, I would only use it to find links to other sources.

Now, the first thing that article says is "This article does not cite any references or sources." Good start. Now, let's look at what the article really looks like:

Quote:

The French GIGN's knife has a liquid mercury vial hidden inside to help automatically orient the blade forward when thrown[citation needed]. The Soviet Spetznaz (special forces) throwing knife is actually a blade gun[citation needed], which uses a very strong coil spring hidden in the handle to propel the blade forward on the press of a button.
Doesn't look good. If you tried to find more information on that, your searches would lead you to a knife enthusiast forums where they find this entire paragraph to be bogus information. Personally, I'd trust knife enthusiasts on the issue of knives over some random Wikipedia editor. Continue searching for this magical french knife, and you won't find anything.

Taking information that seems wrong to begin with, and quoting a Wikipedia article which itself has no references, just isn't proof. I'm sure if you search hard enough, you could find a battle somewhere where throwing knives were used, but I doubt you'll find anything where it was part of standard training. If so, I'd be interested in reading it.

Combine 017 09-09-2009 10:37 AM

Re: Modern Warfare 2

Ya I wasnt to sure about that french knife, but the Spetsnaz do actually have a ballistic knife, although its technically not thrown.
And im content with knowing that Spec Ops are trained with throwing knives, but I just dont care enough to try and prove it to someone who doesnt want to believe it.

Ok, let me get it back on track.. I hate this idea just as I hate the grenade launcher, RPG and 3xfrags..

Re: Modern Warfare 2

What the hell is wrong with the RPG? Its inconsistent with its aim quite often. Id say its a fair weapon.

gekko 09-10-2009 12:25 AM

Re: Modern Warfare 2

Looks like this actually takes the place of frag grenades, judging by the location of the HUD icon.

Bube 09-10-2009 03:58 PM

Re: Modern Warfare 2

The RPG turns the game into too much of a Half-Life deathmatch. Like I said, I like the game because it's a bit different than classic over-the-top shooters. The RPG ruins it.

And I think I'm probably the most-killed person by that stupid grenade-throwing at the start of the round. All the way from the other side of the map. I just die in some freaking impossible ways!
