Shapeshifter vs. Goblin

Here's the deal.
I won't be doing them in order of the bracket, for the reason then people don't say "Oh, ___ will be facing ___ next round", so it will still be a 'secret'.

Also, I will be posting tiny little bios taken from wikipedia to describe what I deem the best (being most hilarious, or least useful) fact about the said creature.

So, let's get this going.

Shapeshifter:

Quote:

While the popular idea of a shapeshifter is of a human being who turns into something else, there are numerous stories about animals that can transform themselves as well.

Goblin:

Quote:

According to some traditions, goblin comes from Gob or Ghob, the king of the gnomes , whose inferiors were called Ghob-lings.

Re: Shapeshifter vs. Goblin

Shapeshifter wins, because he could turn into the Goblin's son Harry Osborn and because of the Goblin's insanity render him emotionally and therefore physically defeated.

Plus the Shapeshifter can turn into a kitten. WIN.

Well one you assume the only Goblin is the Green Goblin.
Two, you assume he actually loves his son.

This can go either way, and gonna research goblins some more.

Goblins are awesome. Shapeshifting is cool but Goblins are crafty and strong. Gotta give props to the Middle Earth Goblins.

Re: Shapeshifter vs. Goblin

Gotta go with the shape shifter on this one. I reckon I could take a pansy assed goblin but a shape shifter, fuck that, it could turn into so many things I have no defence against. A bazooka for example, or a giant net to ensnare me. Yes, a shapeshifter could smash a goblins face in, and so could I.

Death to the Goblin!

Here is an episode of one of my favourite t.v series Red Dwarf, just to iterate what a shape shifter can do. Worth a watch ;)

Waah, that last movie... now I know where the Alien creature designer got its inspiration...

A shapeshifter could transform into that shark. And into an Alien. Into you.

Re: Shapeshifter vs. Goblin

Bah, that means the shapeshifter is gonna win the entire thing since it can turn into the monster it's facing.

Stupid everything monster.

Aren't traditional shifters just people who turn into animals though?

manasecret 06-24-2009 09:51 AM

Re: Shapeshifter vs. Goblin

No no no, the shapeshifter IMO can change shapes, but it does not inherently get the same powers as the shape it shifts into. It only has the powers (if any) that it had originally, which is probably very few since his main power is shapeshifting.

So unless the shape evokes some psychological response from the shapeshifter's enemy, it doesn't really have any effect.

KillerGremlin 06-24-2009 11:56 AM

Re: Shapeshifter vs. Goblin

Yeah, I think we need to clarify the limitations of the Shapeshifter. They can take on shapes/identity of other creatures/people/animals, but they can't emulate those creatures powers and abilities.

Honestly I think that makes shapeshifters fairly limited in the monster world, except for disguising themselves and hiding.

Goblins are smart, crafty, strong...I really have no idea how Shapeshifters are winning.

Angrist 06-24-2009 12:05 PM

Re: Shapeshifter vs. Goblin

Is this a popularity contest, or a 'who would win if pit against each other' thing?

Because the shapeshifter got my vote because it's way cooler, not stronger.

Yep, just as I suspected. The contest is whatever you want it to be.

Re: Shapeshifter vs. Goblin

I also thought shapeshifters were limited in their ability to shift by what they interact with?

Or are we assuming they can do it just on sight as well?

shapeshift FTW !!!

Re: Shapeshifter vs. Goblin

If we need to define the shape shifters limitations then watch the episode of Red Dwarf I posted. We could base this wars shape shifter on the Polymorph. You really should watch it, it's quite funny. Should be worth a few laughs.

Typically in mythology a Shapeshifter (Lycanthrope) is actually a Werewolf.
However they can change into other various animals, and as far as I know only animals - and I think each shapeshifter can only change into one, or a handful of animals. I believe.

Not to be confused with the Star Trek Changeling which can change into whatever the hell it pleases.

Exactly.
Angrist - it's whatever you please. It's a popularity contest, which would win, which tastes better with aside of corn, which can fly farther out of a cannon, which has more water displacement, which has a larger mass, which has better vertical jump. Vote is based on whatever.

Is the character of Kirby considered a shapeshifter since he sucks up the powers of his enemies? If so, I my have to reconsider.

Shapeshifter because it could shift its shape into a small heavy animal.

Re: Shapeshifter vs. Goblin

Actually I don't think weight has a lot to do with how far you can fly out of a cannon. Aerodynamics are way more important.

Inertia has a lot to do with weight, though.
Unless I'm delusional in my state.

Fire a feather and a brick out of a cannon, brick will go farther.

Angrist 06-25-2009 03:41 AM

Re: Shapeshifter vs. Goblin

But it doesn't mean that the heavier your brick is, the further it flies, right? You will reach a point where adding more weight will just shorten the flight distance.

If you took the feathers weight and put it into the form of a very small ball (or a brick), it would fly pretty far. The shape of the feather is the biggest problem, not the weight.

I guess it's a balance between weight to keep momentum, and aerodynamics to minimize air resistance.

KillerGremlin 06-25-2009 02:18 PM

Re: Shapeshifter vs. Goblin

If the object weighs more, you just need a more powerful cannon. I believe it's conservation of momentum.

A feather and cannonball would fall at the same speed/time in a vacuum (no atmosphere). So on Earth a cannonball would obviously be better than a feather because of drag and air resistance, but I thought mass cancels out for one of those equations. I don't remember much from physics, but I think both of you guys should be hugging not fighting.

Now let's get back to arguing about how this thread is total bullshit because the Goblin isn't winning. :p

Red Dwarf is awesome!

And as far as the battle goes:

A goblin is just a goblin, but a shapeshifter could be anything! It could even be a goblin! You know how badass those things are.

Next 3 polls will be later tonight, or tomorrow. I have work to do today and don't have time.

Fyacin 06-29-2009 10:16 AM

Re: Shapeshifter vs. Goblin

Objects fall at the same speed regardless of mass. On earth diregarding air resistance it is 9.8 m/sec. I think (but I haven't done too much physics lately) the only thing that the mass of the object would effect would be the amount of force needed to overcome the amount of friction in the cannon itself. So I don't think weight matters nearly as much as aerodynamics. A heavier object will do considerably more damage though, because of momentum, which is also why the air will slow it down less.

Angrist 06-29-2009 04:36 PM

Re: Shapeshifter vs. Goblin

I've had this discussion before, but on another forum, and about Legolas using 3 arrows instead of one. :D People said that 3x arrow means 3x damage. I said that if the arrow is strong enough, it would be best to bundle the momentum into one arrow. Which would go deeper than 3 separate arrows.
