[Let's Play!] Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Welcome to the very first GT Let's Play! (Cheesy, badly Photoshopped logo included!)

In our plentiful random discussions, BaB and I have discovered that we both have not completed Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past!

Unacceptable! SO.

We decided that we would play through, side-by-side, and put down our triumphs and our struggles (and possibly show you them) and we'll see if we can finally finish this old classic.

INSTRUCTIONS

- Obviously, you'll need a copy of the game! Whether it be the original SNES cart,
the Wii VC version, or the GBA version. If you own a copy of the game, then emulation
is always an option since you can provide screen caps of your journey if you choose.
(REMINDER: ROMs are illegal if you do not own the game so PLEASE do not emulate
unless you own the game you're emulating!)

- Make notes of anything and everything! Part of the fun of Zelda games is their tendencies
to be linear and non-linear at the same time. So if you took the extra step to get a heart
piece or make yourself rich by killing baddies, or whatever it wouldn't hurt to show how
your playthrough was unique for you!
- GT's servers can only handle so much (and this is me assuming because I don't really know),
so if you're going to use attachments, please use them sparingly. If you want to upload a lot
of pics, try using a Photobucket account or something, and to lower the quality or size of the
picture to make the pages load faster if possible.
- I'm going to try making notes throughout playtime about how my runthrough went, since it'll be
good to not jump ahead of everyone else. I think this effort would work much better if we all posted
our collective summaries at the end of the week to compare. But to each their own, I can't order anyone
around.
- This is not a race. I'm trying to give enough time for everyone to move at their own pace, and
also give time for other things as well. We all have social lives (except for BaB).
- Have fun! This is a classic that should be enjoyed as much as possible for years to come!

Join in if you like, I believe Blue is getting in on it as well. We start Monday!

Also leave some questions if you like. We're kinda making this up as we go.

By Monday the 17th you should have finished fighting Agahnim and entered the Dark World!
By Monday the 24th you should have finished getting the fourth crystal in the Dark World!
By Monday the 31st you should have completed the game! And if you have congratulations! You've beaten one of the best games of all time!

I dig the logo.

And would also like to get Acebot and Swan in on this since they have never completed a Zelda game.

Really guys? Really?

Re: [Let's Play!] Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

As I recall BaB never beat Link's Awakening, an even better Zelda game than A Link to the Past.

What I don't get is how you guys have all played Twilight Princess or Wind Waker but you missed out on like the best Zelda games, period.

2D Zelda > 3D Zelda
With the N64 titles *perhaps* being the only exception.

Re: [Let's Play!] Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Seriously, for a "Nintendo forum" you all fail miserably.

Re: [Let's Play!] Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

I've played Link to the Past, but never completed. And LA would be a good one to do as well. I enjoyed that one highly.

BreakABone 08-06-2009 05:56 PM

Re: [Let's Play!] Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Well one the "Nintendo" label on the forum... should probably be dropped. We are hardly a gaming forum.

And the bulk of the talk is generally directed to the 360 at this point.

And second, I can't speak for Munk, but I'm not a Zelda fan... nor a Metroid fan... I've always said I'm not a Nintendo fan, but a Mario fan.

The n64 and GCN saw fewer Mario games so I passed the time by playing some of Nintendo's other franchises.

I think Wind Waker had extraordinary artwork, and TP was... because it was really a launch title for the Wii so yeah.

I've gotten through some of Ocarina of Time, but I don't know it just really doesn't connect with me the same way it connects with everyone else it seems.

KillerGremlin 08-06-2009 06:06 PM

Re: [Let's Play!] Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Man...but 2D Zelda....some of the best dungeons, and the most challenging puzzles, but simple and fun gameplay....A Link to the Past was pretty epic, although it is not my favorite 2D Zelda title. Maybe I am biased from my nostalgia, but nothing resonated for me quite like beating Link's Awakening DX.

Wind Waker was a great game, don't get me wrong...it was exceptional. It's not like I hate 3D Zelda, I love 3D Zelda.

If I can track my GBA copy down I will be joining in

Re: [Let's Play!] Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

I disagree, I think OOT is the Best Zelda game ever...

But, I might actually do this with you guys we will see, I too have never completed a link to the Past, I own the game boy advance version, and I remember I got well into it but I just didnt complete it...I think I got stuck somewhere and I hate to use guides so I just eventually lost interest.

That being said I have completed Link's Awakening.

I got all the way to the last boss in this one and gave up once. I am starting college in a few weeks but if I have time I will play.

BaB and I are hoping to try and finish this in three weeks. My fall semester starts in a few weeks as well. So no worries!

Re: [Let's Play!] Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

When every circumstance of my life is factored in... Quality, Timing, Nostalgia, Inserts (such a pretty map)...
LttP = Greatest Zelda game ever.
I could beat it in one sitting.

You kids disappoint me.
This has been such a drag.

P.S. Magus, get my bowler off your head.

Re: [Let's Play!] Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

I don't think I'm in on this one. I already beat the game at least twice (SNES + AGB).
I also like to play Zelda games by myself or maybe with my brother... I don't want to type about it online.

I never finished the first (halfway through) and second (last boss) Zelda. I own them for AGB now, so if we're going to that one day, I'm in.
The other Zelda game I never beat is Phantom Hourglass. I guess I will, I just need to find out where I am and what to do next.

I'm pretty sure that we can do more Zelda games in the future, but this is pretty much reserved for classics. And more are going to appeal to different people I'm sure. If we did a GT Let's Play of Chrono Trigger I know Blue would be all over it.

Re: [Let's Play!] Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

I may be into this. We have the SNES at our new studio with a copy of LttP. I've beaten it many times and I really do think it is the best Zelda game ever and possibly my favorite game of all time.

That said, I'm not sure if I can stick to any kind of schedule in terms of playing it unless I take the SNES away from the studio or I just play it instead of recording music.

Remember that if the copy is yours emulation is always an option so you can take it with you wherever you go, like on a jump drive or something. And also I don't think I'm gonna say "YOU CAN'T JOIN IN IF YOU'RE NOT GONNA MEET THE SCHEDULED TIMES". It's for all of GT to enjoy. The journaling and comparison thing is just for fun really.

Re: [Let's Play!] Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

I got it for WiiVC. Very nice!

I got it when it came out, and I think I'm around halfway through... Well, I know I'm somewhere past the big plot twist midway through that anyone who has ever played a Zelda game knows is coming.

I'll be happy to join in.

Angrist 08-07-2009 01:39 PM

Re: [Let's Play!] Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Link's Awakening has no midway plot twist. Therefore it cannot qualify for best Zelda game ever.

Also, you had to collect musical instruments. What was it, Zelda gayden??? :gay:

magus113 08-07-2009 02:41 PM

Re: [Let's Play!] Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Oracle of Seasons and Ages were fun for the GBC, even though you collected essences. Don't know what that's about.

Hopefully I'll be planning out the schedule for portions of the game to be finished/blogged about for each week. News of that will be coming in soon.

Angrist 08-07-2009 02:47 PM

Re: [Let's Play!] Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

I wasn't very serious about the instruments.

I've never played Chrono Trigger, how's that? I think there's a DS port now? I might have to get that one day...

The DS port looked and played pretty much the same. The controls could be kept like the original or updated, and I believe there was something about an extra dungeon, but that is a game that is timeless.

See what I did there?

Chrono Trigger is a game about manipulating time. I said it was timeless.

Bad joke.

Well if you have a Wii there's always the VC release. I know GameStop prolly won't have the GBA releases.

Re: [Let's Play!] Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

I got it for Wii VC. Biggest screen.

Shall be interesting to play a Zelda game with only one weapon besides your sword at the ready.

Also having a magic meter.

How much did that cost on Wii-VC?

I believe it's somewhere around 800 points? Whatever the standard SNES price is.

Re: [Let's Play!] Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Its 800 space bucks.

I had 900 points laying around so not too bad.

I wasn't sure if this deserved its own thread, but how awesome is this?

At first I thought it was a toy figure, I immediately considered ebay to find it. Then I found out it's actually a paper model!
You can find the ship here:
http://members.home.nl/saarloos/zeld...%20Red%20Lions

I've known about these models for years now, but this time I think I finally really have to print/make one!

I've tried making paper models before. They're great but just very very time consuming. I have two that I made. One is a Contra diorama and the other is the Shagohod from Metal Gear Solid 3.

The first minutes of ALttP are awesome. I should play them once in a while. The rain, the darkness, the missing uncle... I wish the new Zeldas would have more epic stuff like that. Although I have to say that TP had a lot more than the previous ones (the horse cart, the battle on the bridge...).
