Epic Mickey

Quote:

This looks like a Country Bear or something after acid. File calls it a "Beetle Thing"

This is pretty terrifying take on Mickey Mouse, the file says "Beetleworx," and I presume this is a variation of the BWX guy in the OP.

File's named "Cityscape."

Concepts for the Castle seen in the OP.

Another concept

This file is named "Mean Street," which I guess is a take on the Main Street section of the Disney parks, and suggests that there may be exploration of the various "themed lands."

This one's named "Tomorrowland," and would also suggest that there that one is exploring various "Themed Lands." Maybe even space.

That beach scene the Gamasutra writer was describing. It's absolutely amazing.

Most of this stuff was borrowed from a thread over at GAF, but I got to say I like the style based on the concept art, I love Disney and love platformers so I got my eyes on this one.

I wonder how it will work out. And a Wii game, that's awesome. :)

Nice concept. Let's hope they don't screw up the gameplay.

Epic Mickey is a tale about the 'forgotten' Disney stars: the rides, the characters, the lesser-known cartoons. When nobody any longer cares, they are cast into a dark void; a forgotten world of broken machines and bitter personalities - a bit like Sid's bedroom in Toy Story, but without the friendly furnishings.

This forgotten world is run by Oswald the Rabbit. He was Disney's first creation, made long before Mickey Mouse, and his jealousy of the newcomer has fermented for years. Now, finally, Oswald is ready for revenge.

He unleashes The Phantom Blot to wipe out Mickey and his cartoon world. The Blot pollutes the Disney universe with sticky black ink that makes colours run and fade (as seen on the Game Informer cover), so it's up to Mickey to restore peace and order. And this is where his tools come in.

Mickey has to draw and scribble his way through levels, mending broken bridges by applying the right colour paint or peering through walls after applying thinner. He can even clear rubble from his path by erasing parts of the world.

Our source told us Epic Mickey is a game about thinking and artwork - laterally considering your environment in order to overcome puzzles.

On top of that is a healthy dose of exploration, plus Mickey will be getting "his first makeover in years". "That's why no one's seen his face yet," our source explained, "But he's far more retro than you've seen him for years."
This game sounds really cool.
Like a mix of de Blob and someone's demented childhood.

I've been hearing about this for a few months somewhere, I think Kotaku.

It seems like it's going to be a pretty good game. It had some big-name producer if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah the man who did the first Deus Ex and the Thief series. And I believe System Shock.

Phantom Blot

Oswald

You were all "sheesh" and stuff before, now you're saying something different. Make up your mind :p

I can't say this excites me, but to be honest, I have high hopes for it.

I meant Sheesh as in like Holy shit for that magazine cover. It looked pretty awesome.

Didn't mean it to come off like that but I guess it did. It actually looks kinda cool.

Nice. How did they get stuff like this?

Typhoid 10-20-2009 05:53 PM

Re: Epic Mickey

I don't think those are from the game.
The article said they don't want people seeing Mickey's face because of the transformation - granted that is a rough animation, but I don't think they'd have been able to be released.

Angrist 10-21-2009 08:23 AM

Re: Epic Mickey

Yeah that's what I was also thinking... they were pretty secretive about Mickey's looks.

I do like some of the screens though.

Those images don't work. Here's a link to IGN's utter cesspool of an Image Viewer, but it's better than nothing.

By looks alone, I am unimpressed. Compare this to Super Mario Galaxy, and Epic Mario might as well be GCN 1.0 or worse.

Yeah it doesn't look half as good as the hype made it out to be.

I agree the concept art was amazing, things of nightmares, the actual game looks pretty generic to me.

meh...not nearly as cool as it was made out to be.

I was expecting a much more gothic/steampunk type game...with actually decent graphics.

Here's some footage of all the levels from the e3 demo, and the game looks so much better.
Also love that there will be "Film" stages which are throwbacks to old Mickey projects.
And yeah, still one of my most anticipated games of the year.

Angrist 06-17-2010 11:06 AM

Re: Epic Mickey

I still think the game looks incredibly boring. The 2D platformer... bah, it's a great example of bad level design.
The 3D stuff I saw also looked very generic.

Typhoid 06-17-2010 02:02 PM

Re: Epic Mickey

I think it's an awesome idea.
I can't remember the last time a platformer came out that didn't have the name "Banjo" or "Mario" in it.

I also think it looks really cool. I like the concept.

Angrist 06-18-2010 09:52 AM

Re: Epic Mickey

Not being Mario or Banjo (do people still look up to Banjo?) makes a game more interesting?

I'm glad with more platformers, I think the industry can use them. But some of them just look boring. This is one of them (from what I've seen in the N press conf).

Yes. The characters aren't just characters, they bring an established universe with them. In the end, platformers all have the same basic gameplay. It is the universe where the gameplay takes place that truly males them compelling.

I don't buy your first statement.
And feel that your second is just completely wrong. Its like saying all FPS play the same. They all have the basic premise, but doesn't mean they play the same.

Or I guess better example,

3 Platformers
3 consoles
3 Different ways of playing.

Typhoid 06-18-2010 02:21 PM

Re: Epic Mickey

I agree with Strangie on this.

Quote:

The thing is, just like any game that is comparable to itself, all 3 of those platformers are....platformers. Which means they're the same, aside from the fact that in one of them you reverse time, and in one of them you shoot things with upgradable guns. But you're still jumping on platforms, be it left to right, or in a 3D world. Just like in an FPS you have to shoot bad guys. This is why the big difference is the location, and not the type of game.

Quote:

Have you played any recent FPS games? They all play basically the same. Just like an open-world game typically plays the same. IE RDR and GTA (yes I know they're made by the same company, but my point stnds.)

The reason I agree with Strangie is because the universe is entirely different. It's not something we've seen before, and it's not some 2D thing made for XBL or Wiiware. It's an actual, new, platforming game. The universe hasn't been played before. It's fresh, and it's new.

Unlike the mario universe where you've essentially played it 5 times before, and the R&C universe where you've also essentially played it 5 times before. I'm not knocking those games.

Rather, the fact there hasn't been a Mickey Mouse game practically ever (for current gen at least) makes it entirely fresh. And considering it's an actual game and not for download, that makes it even better.

How can you comment on the level design to such a high degree before playing it?

And platformers are my favorite genre of video game - to say their all the same is to say every video game is the same because you're playing something with a video involved.

High five!

I love me some platformers which is why loved Nintendo's e3.
