Olympic Opening Ceremony

Who's tuning in tonight?

I'm making some kickin' rad Lettuce Wraps and tuning in at 6pm. I hope it's good. There's a ton of people at PG who went to the rehearsals and they said it wouldn't be disappointing. They said there was a lot of filler though, where Nelly Furtado and Sarah McLachlan will be tonight.

Also, I was reading the newspapers and everyone was wondering who would light the torch. Personally, I have no clue who it will be. Any ideas? People were saying Wayne Gretzky wouldn't for sure, and in his place would be Terry Fox's mom. Who knows.

Re: Olympic Opening Ceremony

Wayne Gretzky is confirmed to definitely not be lighting it.
I really hope it is Terry Fox's mom - then again we may be biased.

I'm watching it at 4 when it's starting, because the Canucks game's on PPV and I have nothing better to do at 4.:p

I know a guy who's in the ceremony, and he said it will blow my mind out of my own asshole.

VANOC cornered the market on everything related to the Olympics.
Business aren't allowed to display anything Olympic style, they are not allowed to even use the word "Olympic" unless they are official sponsors.
Radio stations aren't even allowed to say "Vancouver 2010", "Whistler 2010", "Vancouver Olympics" etc. in any way for self-gain because those have all been trademarked by VANOC - unless they are official sponsors.

I was downtown today for a bit...it was pretty wild.

Def watching the opening ceremonies.

$5 says it's our asshole premier Gordon Campbell that lights the torch.

Kind of a dick move.

I saw the crash and some photos. 144 miles an hour to 0 all at once, lots of blood.

It looks like the Canucks fucked up the lighting of the cauldron. It was cool that Gretzky lit it though.

Yeah, I understand that. What I said wasn't even necessarily a joke, it's just real. I mean, you're supposed to have this happy ceremony celebrating these games and the saddest thing possible just happened. I couldn't even really watch the ceremonies because of it. Any excitement for the Olympics is definitely tempered. It's sad as hell. I'm actually going to delete that post because I don't really want to seem insensitive and I didn't quite mean it to be that jokey. It's just a really bad way to start these Olympics. I guess especially with these high-flying downhill events, it will be tough to keep the recent accident out of my head.

I enjoyed the ceremony up until the end really.

The malfunction with the torch lighting and then having a second one further away was eh.

And this pic sums it up.

Id would have to agree.

The floor projections were really cool.

Also that fiddle player was either batman or Satan.

Typhoid 02-13-2010 04:43 AM

Re: Olympic Opening Ceremony

I liked it, actually.

The fiddle music, honestly - made me feel Canadian. And fiddle music hasn't ever done that to me before.

And with the malfunction of the floor, I say big deal. What was lost? 35 seconds? A tiny bit of ppageantry? I mean, Gretzky would have still had to run the flame.

I liked it. Certain parts of it actually got to me. Like when the Canadian athletes walked in, and when the slam poet was giving his speech.

I was not let down with what happened.

Bond 02-13-2010 11:29 AM

Re: Olympic Opening Ceremony

I agree with Typhoid. There was something much more human about the ceremony than China's mechanistic mass. Actually, both ceremonies would tell an outsider observer quite a lot about each country.

Yeah, I enjoyed this ceremony more than Bejing's.

If you are talking about the luge then lighten up...those guys are crazy as fuck; as Robin Williams joked: What drunken, German gynecologist invented this sport? What guy went, "I want to dress like a sperm, shove an ice skate up my ass, and ride balls first down an ice chute. Ya. That would be fun." ?

Was it a tragedy....yes. Could there have been better safety precautions....probably. Is there still an extreme risk in participating in any extreme sport be it nascar, snowboarding, extreme skiing, dirtbiking, the one where they flip their snowmobile, the luge, etc. ....YES.

I thought the opening ceremonies were good. The Winter Olympics are so much better than the Summer ones.

Good job Canada! :bath:

Dyne 02-13-2010 05:42 PM

Re: Olympic Opening Ceremony

Hahaha. Gretzky lit it.

Also he went past my building with the torch! Eee hee hee.

Yeah it was disappointing with the final hydraulic failure but it was bound to happen.

We watched the luge trials today and even though they lost 10 stories on their start (by moving to the women's start), they were going goddamn fast.

Instead of making a new thread, I just thought I'd post in here how pumped I am that Canada broke the record for most Golds ever won by any country at the Winter Olympics.

I'm very surprised too. It seemed like everyone thought Canada would struggle getting Golds, to begin with. I think I heard somewhere that the record for most medals won was by Germany, with 36, and the Americans got 37 this time, but I really have to check on that first.

Typhoid 02-28-2010 07:39 PM

Re: Olympic Opening Ceremony

The US did indeed get 37 medals.

But realistically, we won the most.;)

I don't think I'm going to watch. I wasn't very impressed with the opening ceremony this time and I have other things I need to get done.

Re: Olympic Opening Ceremony

The thing I liked about the closing ceremony (I stopped watching because my head started hurting too much - no that's not a jab at the ceremony itself) was it started with them raising the last pole that failed in the opening ceremony. I thought that was pretty funny.

Also: There was so much lip syncing that it made me sick. I hate how the Olympics are all about that now.

Also Also: Joannie Rochette is a babe.

The final part of the ceremony was awful.

Nickelback, Avril Lavign, Simple Plan, Hedley.

FUcking ridiculous

The only part I liked was Neil Young, and to a lesser extent; Michael Buble.

You guys may have beat us in hockey...but then you had Nickelback play.

Just so you Canananananananananadians know, Nickelback is less popular than a pickle:

I dont get why americans think most canadians like Nickleback, infact most canadians hate them.

Im a proud member of that group.

Go pickle!

Typhoid 03-01-2010 02:47 PM

Re: Olympic Opening Ceremony

I don't mind Nickelback.
Then again, I started liking them well before it was cool to hate them.

I liked the stereotypical Canadian Buble-fest-o-thon that took place.

KillerGremlin 03-01-2010 03:02 PM

Re: Olympic Opening Ceremony

I also heard Nickelback before they got popular...one of my local radio stations did plugs for smaller bands, and back in the day Nickelback was riding the post-grunge movement. I would probably hate Nickelback less if [they were less popular] or if Chad Kroeger wasn't such a tool.

[] = I put that into brackets...my feeling on Nickelback's popularity is that there is nothing wrong with being popular. I'm not one of these people who hates bands because they are popular...I mean obviously...I love a ton of popular bands from DMB to Metallica to Incubus...what drives me nuts about Nickelback is that a lot of people think they are hard rock or metal and that they are the ceiling for what those genres have to offer. In a way Nickelback sort of promotes closed-minded music listening for a lot of people.

Anyway...I give you Canadians a hard time. I know you all don't love Nickelback. In fact a lot of awesome music has come out of Canada, including one of my favorite hip-hop labels.

Also, serious congrats on Hockey. :p

I think Russia mad a very stupid choice to have Socchi host the 2014 winter games. They are building about 99% of the needed buildings (event building to hotels) from scratch to the tune of 17 billion dollars.

Both of those are hot, and also Ashley McIvor (Mmm.. that's one tall glass of water), and Jessica Dube.

I was going around saying Joannie Rochette was hot but then her mom died and that wasn't cool.

Also Cheryl Bernard the curler is the MOTY. (Milf of the year.)

Also our closing ceremonies were so freaking budget. I hate Neil Young.. but then they played all the other kinds of bands I hate too. So disappointing.

Also John Furlong's french was TRES TERRIBLE.
