Question: Why a D-Pad over a Control Stick for Fighting Games?
Why a d-pad over a control stick for fighting games? In the arcades you use a stick so why with console games is the control stick inadequate?
|
I seriously wouldn't know. I use the stick most of the times, but sometimes the D-pad is faster or something... dunno, I guess it's good for fast combos...
|
Yeah, what Angrist said. Sometimes the D-Pad is way better for combos. I don't know about the arcade thing. Make because you can grab the joy stick while on a controller you move it with your thumb.
|
In the arcade(as far as I know), the stick isn't as "analogy" as say the console sticks. It doesn't push as far, so it pushes more like if you pushed on a d pad. But if I ever do play fighting games(which I don't that often, not my fav.) I prefer the d pad. Its more quicker to move with(like others have said already).
|
Simple, it's easier to just press one of the 8 directions instead of moving (or Rollong) a stick to it. Just like in thps... the stick just makes movement horrid.
|
I only play fighting games at arcades, so I can't help you.
And yeah, THPS is horrible with the control stick. it just feels so... BLAH. |
Heh... i like THPS 1 and 2 with a joystick and i was pretty good at those games  well i think.. i havent played THPS1 for ages.. since grade 7 but i was pretty good.. 400 k I think was my best score in the school....... loved that level..
but.. uhh.. yeah fighting games are easier with a dpad unless your playing it an arcade cause you hold it different or.. soemthing.. i dunno.. its just easier to pull of long combos with a dpad than the joystick... |
Combos is a good point, with a control stick its harder to get it to do exactly what you want it to do.
|
A joystick and a control stick are 2 different things. The joystick you use your hand, and hit it to the side, on a control stick, you use your thumb and it's just too slow.
But nothing can beat an experienced arcade player using his joystick. A d-pad is still slower. |
Well they have a joy-stick controller out already for each console, dont they? I think so. At least cube dose.
|
Don't think so. Haven't seen one for Gamecube. Saw one for Xbox.
Dc still has the best one ever made. |
This works with any console with the right adapter.

'this stick should be out at launch'??

It probably is, just not out at many stores. Many 3rd party things tend to be spread out, cause its too many accessories for a store to hold.

And that green DC one r0x0rz! |
The only console arcade stick I have ever owned was for NES.

I agree with Joeiss, it sucked playing THPS with the analog stick. It was nice while you were skating around, but doing tricks became much tougher. The only kind of games I like using the analog stick with are shooters, racers, and action/adventure games. When I play fighters, rpgs, or 2d games I like using the d-pad.
|
Basically, I only use an Analog stick when analog controlls are required...
like in tony hawk, the D Pad can make your eight tricks as simple as pressing a button, while the Stick is more pron to making errors. For example, with a stick you can't stop on a dime because the button is still pressing a little when you let go... so precision movement becomes more diffucult. A game like Mario or Zelda is good for the stick, but when you play a game where you come off a ramp and try to stop exactly after 3 spins that loss of precision stopping makes it harder to land. in sports games, like Madden, I use the D-Pad because when running I need to stop some times to take the defense off of thier feet... while in basketball games I use the analog stick because angleing towards the basket becomes eaisier. Overall, I prefer the D-Pad... the stick is only used in special occasions for me. |
