Never Gonna Guess GamePro's Game of the Year
 

Well in a year that saw the release of many great titles such as Vice City, Ratchet & Clank, Splinter Cell, Super Mario Sunshine and Metroid Prime. One game stood out among the rest at the office of GamePro. That game was none other than Eternal Darkness : Sanity's Requiem for the Nintendo Gamecube.

I don't know how, I probably will never know why, but Eternal Darkness was voted Gamepro's Game of the Year. Ok technically, they had no game of the year, they had all 10 of the editors pick their top 10 games, Eternal Darkess got the top spot from 3 reviewers while every other game got one vote apiece.

So what are the thoughts?

Thats...interesting...ED was good, no doubt...very innovative in a lot of ways...polished too...but I dont think it stood up to some other stuff out there...but I cant complain...

you gotta be sh*ttin me, ED does NOT deserve GOTY, especially with so many other amazing games that have come out

ED:SR is one of the most unique games I've ever played. I thinkg Metroid Prime and Zelda Four Swords are better but ED is prolly third on my list for cube.

I agree with it. In some ways it was even better than MP.

game informer, which i just subscribed to (it was only 10$ for ten issues, and i like the mag) gave vice city game of the year

I'm sorry, but what's with all this disfatisfaction with ED? It was definately one of the most unique games this year, and I think my second favourite behind Metroid Prime (SMS, R&C joint 3rd, with Splinter Cell a very close 4th)... I reckon those who didn't like the game were those who bought into the immense hype surrounding the game. It's a shame really, because the game was really awsome, but it was still impossibe to live up to the unbelievable hype.

So maybe I agree with some of you with the fact that Metroid Prime should have got the award, but not for the same reasons :D.

This is why sometimes games that could be GOTY are released early in the year. With Zelda:WW being released in March, will we still look back at this time next year and say it was GOTY if other great games come out in Nov. and are more talked about still at this time(ie: MP and GTA:VC)

I don't think anyone, let alone any site like IGN, or any magazine like Famitsu is going to forget any worthy candidate for GOTY, or Zelda for that matter.

ha, I would have given it to Tekken 4 before ED...

I think most places agree than Vice City deserves the award. I personlly don't care. I would have probably given it to TS2 for being so great despite being a multi platform game.

I've never played ED so I guess I can't say anything. Except I thought Metroid Prime was really an "above and beyond" game.

Actually, it seems that most places think that Metroid Prime was the Game of the Year, I think thus far, it's like GameSpot-Metroid Prime, GameSpy-Metroid Prime, some other place Metroid Prime, GamePro-ED, and GameInformer and PSM- Vice City.

Metroid Prime even won Gamefaq's little game of the year poll... which kinda surprised me cuz I thought most people would be like "GRAND THEFT AUTO OWNZ YU0!"...

Although GTA:VC was a close second...

I don't think MP should be the GotY though... *shrugs* it was a great game, but I think I had more fun with GTA:VC, even if the fun ended up not lasting as long as it did with GTA3 :p

And people always ask me why I don't subscribe to GayPro. Eternal Darkness is a good game but I personally think it's one of the most overrated games on this planet. Honestly, I think IGN, Gamespot, and GamePro are exagerating on this game.

It's funny, I also think Metroid Prime is overrated... I feel like gekko, me against the world in some opinions.

Hhah you're not the only ones, I think Metroid is a underrated game as well.. er o.. that's not what yall said. I think MP and ED are both good games, but ED wasn't GOTY caliber.

Yep... ED was more overrated than MP was... yep... I'm not so sure what makes MP game of the year material... :unsure:

no flaming here... I think when you guys say things like "I think MP is overrated" etc, you should say what games that came out in 2002 were better? Personally, I think that MP is the most original game I've played since GTA3... and certainly the best game to come out in 2002, as for ED, I just bought it used based on this thread, and I love it, no, not quite GOTY, but I think it's amazing in many ways

I just couldn't get into Metroid, I simply didn't like the concept... and the controlls, ugh.

They are so easy that it makes the game hard. I would rather have more gun control like in a normal FPS, that toggle crap is retarded.

Metroid isn't horrible though, it just isn't great either.

Although I think Metroids controls are good enough, after taking a short break from Metroid (after beating it 100%) to play some Medal of Honor, then going back to Metroid (to beat it 100% on hard mode just for the hell of it :p ), I realized that I like MoH's control scheme 10 times better than metroid's...

As for listing what games I think were better, I really suck at ranking certain games above others... Even if it's in my own opinion, I don't really fully form an opinion on which of the BEST games is truly THE BEST... heh... I just think Metroid is overrated, just like ED... Still a great game, but I think the reason NGC fans were so overly pleased with ED and Metroid is because they were like "Oh my god a good game! :o" and had something worth spending their money on after a long drought ;)

Deathshand, some of that could be true about N fans finally having a good game to rave about, but I also think that can make you think more negatively about a game, since so many people seem to rave about a game, naturally you can be inclined to disagree with the masses (can't blame anyone for that), or maybe it's because I'm a Metroid fan from way back that I love it. Anyway, I just got my Cube on xmas, with MP so I'm not one of those Nintendo fans that had Halo envy or anything, but I was just unimpressed with the selection on my ps2. Besides SOCOM online, nothing really grabbed me the way MP did in the review on gamespot. I also don't think it's fair to compare MP to a FPS... really not the same, and since you played MP to 100% you know that. I can't really imagine the controls differently now, but to each his own, right? ED... I just have to say this is a great game, the mood/atmosphere just drew me right in from the beginning, the gameplay is addicting as hell and I love the whole concept... again I don't think I'm being "overly pleased" because of my lack of games... because I really have no lack. Okay, here say I see ED at my friends house, and REALLY like it (imagin that!) and all I have is a ps2, or xbox, what would compare? Silent hill 2? Didn't do it for me...
