Americans told to stock food and water, prepare safe rooms
THE WASHINGTON POST
WASHINGTON, Feb. 11 ¡ª Top federal officials yesterday issued their most pointed advice since Sept. 11, 2001, on precautions the public should take against terrorist attacks, warning that every home should be stocked with three days¡¯ worth of water and food in case of a strike with chemical, biological or radiological weapons. THEY ALSO recommended that families consider designating a room where they will gather in the event of such an attack, and have on hand duct tape and heavy plastic sheeting to seal it, as well as scissors, a manual can opener, blankets, flashlights, radios and spare batteries. The officials said they believe the al Qaeda terrorist network is particularly targeting New York and Washington. Ranking officials of the Department of Homeland Security told reporters at a briefing that Americans must take some responsibility for protecting themselves, but stressed that people should not feel panicked or abandoned by the government. read on at http://msnbc.com/news/871342.asp#BODY |
You should have that stuff anyways in the event of a natural disaster, i.e. earthquake.
|
I live in Bakersfield so I'm not worried about such an attack... unless they want to pick on little cities.
|
Nobody wants to go to bakersfield.
|
It's gonna be interesting if something does happen. I'm not really gonna "prepare" since I live in a smaller town. Then again, its next to Omaha, which is close to Bellevue where Offutt Air Force Base is. meh. Al-Qaeda will pick on NYC and DC most likely. Or maybe LA.
|
Im not worried. The only things the Terriosts might attack around me is the Catapillar World Headquarters, or maybe the State Farm Insurance World HQ. But thats very unlikely...
My spanish teacher said something about that water and window thing...I just kinda laughed. |
i live in toronto :)
|
They're going to go after the Eaton Center...
|
i don't think i will really "prepare" here at school, but at home my mom already has stuff like that (in case of a natural disaster like tornado)
my dad is in the Army so right now we are more concerned about whether or not he's going to be home at all (he's not home right now) |
Bah I'm not worried... I live a couple miles from DC... what's there to worry about?... Oh... wait... hmm...
really though I don't think people should be worrying too much when the government says something about POSSIBLE ATTACK THIS THAT BAM!... |
DeathsHand, you have less to be worried about. Numerous anti-aircraft missle launchers are positioned in the city, and F-16 patrols are going on.
You may be near a big target, but you're also the most prepared of any area. |
I live 20 miles west of Philly yet I don't think that Philadelphia will be a target cause there is no reason for them to launch nuclear weapons here. Washington is where the government is and New York has the biggest populations in the US. Well that is just what I think, I don't really know much about all this though.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
I live across the lake from Chicago. If some crazy nation/terrorist cell decided to launch (even though Chicago is mid-country... unlike LA, Houston [Mexico won't protect us], New York, and DC) I'd be one of many to evacuate.
*shrugs as he realized he shoved in a random perspective* |
*looks at location* :( I don't feel so good
|
Let's see, this weekend I will be in Syracuse, NY which is a safe distance from the city, and during the week I live in in Delaware and suburban Pennsylvania. I think I'm good unless they just go to random places and hit the "soft targets" like movie theaters and malls and stuff...

Even though I'm so far away from the US, I still feel a bit unsafe because we have allied with the US.
|
bobcat, do you live anywhere near the Sydney Opera House?

I was just wondering because our school band is going to be playing there in the third week of June, maybe during our off-time I'll stop by your office. :D
|
ha I liked tonight's daily show... they were joking about how the items they tell you to have (like plastic and duct tape to seal windows) really wouldn't do much of anything to protect you and stuff, then the moment of Zen at the end of the show was a clip from one of those old videos they showed in schools about how you should "Duck and cover" if there was an atomic bomb blast ;)

Ahhhhhhhhhhh!
-- I live pretty close to the downtown city area -- I work in Manhattan -- Always use the subway to get there -- Made no such preperations uhm, those stats aren't looking too pleasant. :( Help Us All, Dear Lord! |

I work from 9-5, we can do lunch or something. Keep in touch through PM as it gets closer. I'm in the IBM building. You can't miss it, but it's a bit far to get from the Opera House. |
I live right next to Houston. But why should I worry? Nothing but poor black people there.
|
well i live in New Jersey and im kindda worried cause we are right in the middle of all this.
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh |
I wouldnt fear living on the east coast for something like North K missles (which I think the reports was original suggesting at). Even if they could hit the Main land, it probably wouldnt reach farther then California.
