Portable music... MD or MP3?

well ive got a buncha money saved up.. i guess enought o buy any sort of portable audio md mp3 whatever it is, but i dunno which i should get. Im lookin at getting a good sony MD one of the higher models but then i look at the price and its kinda high considering the fact that this 10 gb ipod i saw at a store was 459.99 ( canadian and i know where i can get it much cheaper) but the 10 gb is useless as hell for me.. im never gonna fill 10 gb of songs Or shoudl i get a small like 128 mb mp3 player?

What do you guys think about the Ipod.. does anybody have it? It looks real nice .. fits in your pocket and the box was pretty :) I asked the guy at the store if they had other models besides 10 gb and he said no so i was a lil disapointed because id have trouble filling 1/10 of it with songs that i actually like..

Re: Portable music... MD or MP3?

I have an iPod and I would definately recommend it. I got the iPod when they were first introduced so I have the 5G iPod which is no longer made but it has the original mechanical scroll wheel and the original button layout which I think is better than the new one. And although you may not have a lot of songs now, your collection will most likely grow and I think it's better to have extra room than not enough.

Mini hardrive technology is much better for portable music than Mini Disc also.

And the iPod can also hold other information since it's a mini hardrive so if you have tons of room leftover you store files or other stuff if you want to free up some of your computer's room. And you can download text or audio books so if you're into reading or listening to stories you can do that also.

The iPod is the best portable music player. I strongly urge you to get it over the Sony MD player.

Re: Re: Portable music... MD or MP3?

iPod HIGHLY recommended. as Gamemaster said. it doubles for many other uses.

I have a 30gig one. i can store all my music. then put say some files on it (big ones) take it to afriends computer and put them on there without needing CD's or anything

Not to mention it plays games on it. (ex. bricks (kinda like pong)... solitare, etc. i think they can make more for download. not sure bout that yet.)

has callender. Alarm clock :) you can save mesages in there and all that.

i've never regreted getting it. and its so easy and quick to put files on it too :)

Yeah, I'd say get the 30 gig. If you're already spending close to 400$ on a 15 why not just double the size for 100$?

And if you're not going to want to drop the bones on an mp3 player don't CD players that play mp3 encoded cds kind of make minidisc obsolete?

i have about 8gigs of songs on mine. But, my friend and his bothers have over 500 CD's each. So his 30gig iPod has like 300 full CD's coppied onto his ipod. roughly 3000 songs.

i go over there and copy some of thier cd's whenever i feel like having some new music. hehe

And a CD player that can play mp3's fits about 150 songs on 1 CD.
But get a portable DVD player that plays mp3's and fit like what? over 500 songs one on DVD. not sure how many.

Tee hee, that's cool, have they thought about opening up a small business and renting out their CD's. ;)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Portable music... MD or MP3?

once you get rolling on getting songs. be it however you are getting them :P they tend to fill up quickly.

as aposed to a 128mb mp3 player you'd fit like 20 or so songs on it.

Trust me, whatever iPod you get, you'll be happy as hell with it. Plus the sound quality on the iPod is Superb.

dunno of any canadian stores tho. sorry. :p

Are you using physical money to buy your iPod, or are you using something like a credit card. Because you could use eBay and see how much they run on there.

Question.

What's the volume like on the iPod? How loud can you make it. I was always a little disapointed with the volume on my sony discman (the volume on the radio was fine, but when it had to spin the disc as well, I lost like 1/3 of my total volume.

I'll put it this way, it can get too loud if you turn it up all the way.

Do you have a good video card right now? Or is that something that isn't of a high priority for you right now?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Portable music... MD or MP3?

got a GeForce4 Ti 4200.

im all set on everything computer wise. going to get an extra 160gig HD as i said. which would give me 240gb total.........And im going to get another 512mb DDR Ram to boost RAM up to 1gb. But might not have to use gift card for the extra ram.

doesnt need to be computer stuff. anything really. Like im thinking about getting a new portable phone with caller id perhaps.......

Well also i might pick up Unreal II video game. didnt want it before cuz it was only Single player. But they making a kickass free upgrade online to make it play online now. and it sounds REALLY good, classed base with vehicles and stuff. Gotta love computer games. they dont add something and you wish they did. they can always add it in later. :) Games only like 20 - 30 anyway. (odd price considering its a new game)

Anywho. back to subject of buying. was also looking into a new computer desk. but i doubt they'd have any at that store.

Bottom line is i get $425 of free goods and i need to spend it in 90 days. :p

Hmm.

Well you can buy another iPod. Then send it to my address and I would be most grateful.

Well actually I'm highly considering one. I'm sick of the stupid CD players. I need something smaller. By the way do they come with those fancy earphones and tube like LCD?

The cheapest place you can find iPods that I know of is on Amazon.

Ive been reading some reviews... only bad ones just to see the downsides of the product... For anybody here with one can you tell me if the battery life really stinks and if your a windows user i read that some people get it set up and ready to use it in like 40 minutes and some people spend days trying to get it work to no avail and end up giving it back for a Creative Zen mp3 player...

8 hours battery life is really **** tho... that barely makes it through a day of school... and the battery isnt replaceable thus after 250-350 charges the thing becomes a paperweight... a very pretty paperweight tho.. a $500 paperweight...

Jason1 08-22-2003 09:59 PM

In my new Job, we are allowed to listen to music while we work. Many people bring in CD players, but they always struggle with the CD's, and their players get mighty dirty. And since my current MP3 player is a bitch and wont work on Windows XP, im SEIROUSLY considering getting an Ipod. They do work on PC's correct?

The battery is replaceable by Apple I believe. And my original vinatge 5G goes for the classic 10 hours on one charge.

And your comment about the iPod barely making it through a school day is incorrect because you don't listen to music the entire day you're at school. You probably listen to it 2 hours or less (unless you're really sneaky and you tune out in every one of your classes).

As for the Windows compatibility, I can't tell you much except that Apple has chosen a specific music application for the PC that works correctly. But there's probably a lot of other software out there that individuals have made or small third parties that claim to work with the iPod and so people will use the software unnapproved by Apple and then complain that the iPod doesn't work. So I suggest that if you do buy a Windows iPod, you use the software Apple designates.

Edit: Congratulations Mushlafa, you're one of us now. :D

I've yet to use the damn thing but... really... i have heard A LOT of bad things about music match.. i heard its awful. Some say it takes osme getting used to and whatever. I'll try it and if it sucks il switch.. but for now.. since i cant get it to install anyway il have to wait... my average in school was a 56.. i dont do very good.. il be listening to it a lot ;)

One thing that REALLY caught my eye was the fact that you can put text files on them and read then on the lil screen.. i was thinking.. on test days they let you listen to music.. i can just put the ipod on the desk.. open up the text file and read my notes while im writing a test :D :D

My friend has an ipod and bought this cool thing for it that lets it play through his car or anyones car for that matter. I guess it has something to do with the antennae. U set the ipod on a radio station and ur actuall radio on that same station and it plays whatever the ipod is playing. It was less than 20 bucks methinks. Cool thing is that if a car pulls up next to you on same station the ipod takes it over for them too. muahahah. Works on any radio btw, doesn't have to be ur cars....

Whats wrong with your windows installer? I had a problem with mine that I just found out how to fix, maybe its the same thing??? Just wondering, because I couldn't get access to mine and it said I was in safe mode or that it was not installed correctly but I found out how to get mine working again. It was on Win2000, but it could be the same for other versions as well?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Portable music... MD or MP3?

me ipod last for more then 10 hours. as far as i've tracked it without charging. And it'll last a hell of a lot more then 250 to 350 charges.

Plus the iPod is one of the very few with SO MANY addons and accessories for it. For example. one is an extra battery pack you can plug in to it and use it if your ipods battery is dead. There for it never becomes a paperweight (wouldnt even if you didnt have extra battery packs) same type of deal a Laptop would have. the batteries last for a long long time. (as far as chargings go)

As for MusicMatch..... its an annoying program. its a bitch to work with at first and confusing. once you understand what its actually doing tho, it becomes easy, you just load it up. put your music files on and be done with it.

But also Apple will be making the program Apple users use with thier iPods on windows sometime. iTunes i think it is.
