My old computer started doing that.

It crashed soon afterwords.

And I have no idea on how to fix it.

Is it just me, or did that sentence structure paired with those words make no sense whatsoever

Trust me, its not just you.

I just read through his post, and I was able to kind of infer what was going on.

Im gonna guess he has 98. I've had that happen quite a bit on my old computer where it freezes when shutting down. I'm not sure on a fix, but I recommend just running scan disk just to make sure nothing is wrong with the OS

i am running XP.
i was fiddling around with the wires because i was bored... i guess thats why this is happening. :( silly me. also the lights on the front of my computer arnt working (the power on lights, flashes when loading). after i "fiddled" they dont work either.
i am thinking maybe i should smash it to pieces? unless anyone has an answer... (i just cant LIVE without lights/ability to switch computer off).
thanks anyway

Ultimate 12-07-2003 12:13 PM

Re: my computer wont turn off .

i am using english 2.1 but that had many flaws so i have upgraded to english 2.3 and everything seems much better.

another thing, is it just me or are a few things backwards around here? e.g 1st > last post?#

EDIT: i have fixed above problem, just had to ajust settings :)

Yeah we're using counting version 3 beta.
Can't you bring the comp back to the store?

Ultimate 12-07-2003 12:20 PM

Re: my computer wont turn off .

well no i got it a few years ago and it was second hand, i have "upgraded" it, (motherboard, GFX card) and i dont think theyll help.

btw by "fixed problem" i was referring to some display thingy.... my "computer wont turn off" problem remains :(

Re: my computer wont turn off .

Have you ran scandisk just to double check? Since you have XP, it might just be taking a crappingly long time to shut off. What's the specs of your comp. Ultimate?

Ultimate 12-07-2003 01:14 PM

Re: my computer wont turn off .

i think i will run scanndisk to make sure at some point,
and i dont think its just taking a long time, one time i left it for ages :(
the specs as far as i know are
-1.2 ghz amd duron
-256mb sdram
-64mb geforce4 gfx card
-black keyboard (with grey handrest)

It's that black keyboard causing the conflict. Older computers prefer the older, off-white style. You may be able to keep the handrest though...

On a more serious note, what exactly was the location of the wires you "fiddled with?"

Ultimate 12-07-2003 01:38 PM

Re: my computer wont turn off .

umm they're near the lights i think... i "fiddled" with the wires conjoining the lights to the motherboard. i dont think this has anything to do with the fact my computer doesnt turn off but... any advice on how to put either of these problems right would be appreciated.

I'll try to ask my roomate if I get a chance today. Also, is your avatar a copy of a message you get or is it just something clever you found? I assume it is the latter, but if not, it may be useful.

Re: my computer wont turn off .

It sounds like the connectors from the case/lights on the case going to the mobo aren't hooked up the correct way. Best way to fix that is to open the case, if you have the mobo manual with you, follow the picture diagram to correctly hook the wires back up.

Re: my computer wont turn off .

I think it would be great if your computer were unfixable because it would teach you not to "fiddle" with things you know nothing about.

Was this desire to "fiddle" brought on by boredom or is A.D.D. your excuse for any mistake you make?

There is a patch on the MS website. I used it, but it didn't really work, however it may help you.

I'd recommend upgrading your OS.

Bobcat beat me to it. I was just to recommend you to that windows 98 patch. I recall having a somewhat similar problem on my old computer, and that patch fixed it right up.

Lol, that will teach you not to fiddle with wires unless you know for sure what you're doing.

Do you have any USB devices plugged in? I've heard several people say that sometimes XP has trouble shutting down when it has certain USB devices plugged in. (I know that in saying this, I invite a multitude of MAC users to bash XP, but I had to say it because it's true).

I had that problem a while ago with my keyboard, I just used the PS/2 adapter that came with it and it shut down just fine. Also, one of my friends said that MS had a patch for this problem. I never looked because I fixed it before I had a chance to.

lol I remember going to the Windows XP launch and they were saying how compatible it is with USB. The guy plugged in like 8 or 9 USB devices simultaneously and there was no crash, and they all jumped up and down and stuff..................but he didn't shut it down :hmm:

I can't even think of 5 USB devices that I would need plugged in at once.

The mouse and keyboard don't really count because they're necessities that everyone uses.

You can get an all-in-one printer/scanner/copier/fax.

The camera only needs to be plugged in for a second to load the pictures and then you remove it.

As for external CD-ROM drive and hardrive, only the mediocre/bad ones still use USB, good ones use Firewire.

And so does the iPod.

i had the exact same problem, i never fixed it tho. I would always just hold the power button for 5 seconds then my comp turned off and i did that for about a year... after the first month of doing it i disabled scandisk cuz it was annoying :)

Re: my computer wont turn off .

I thought that I'd never use 5-6 USB ports either. Now i'm glad I have them all. I plug in some sound pulsing lights, Dazzle, a jump drive, my Mp3 player cable, my camera cable, and my mouse. I know that your camera only has to be plugged in for like 15 seconds at a time, but it's easier to just leave the cord plugged in so that you don't have to reach around to the back of the case everytime you need to pull some pictures off of it.

*shrugs and walks away*

Ok i have another problem now!
this ones about the buttons on my buttonboard and how they dont do the things they should.
well, the problem is, the buttons on my buttonboard dont do the things they should. like the button for @ does a " and the button for # does a | and im sure alot of them are all messed up n stuff.
who knows how to put this right?

Jonbo298 12-13-2003 11:12 AM

Re: my computer wont turn off .

Did you pop out keys on your keyboard and just randomly put them back on?

Ultimate 12-13-2003 11:19 AM

Re: my computer wont turn off .

no silly! all the keys are in the right position.

Jonbo298 12-13-2003 11:23 AM

Re: my computer wont turn off .

Then either the keyboard is acting up or windows is not reading each keystroke and showing the correct key pressed. If you have another keyboard handy, plug it in to see if its the keyboard or windows.

Canyarion 12-14-2003 07:04 AM

Re: my computer wont turn off .

 Did you check the properties of the keyboard? Chances are that you've just selected another language or district.
French keyboards for example have an 'azerty' layout instead of a 'qwerty'.
Also, you could try pressing ctrl + shift. It changes the layout:
? =
/ -
> :
: ±

Hope that helps. :)
