Fighting Games
So recently TheSlyMoogle and I have become obsessed with fighting games, which is ironic because our obsessions came about at the same time without either of us knowing that the other was also becoming obsessed with them. We just happened to sign on MSN one day ad realized both of us had been playing fighter games.
Moogle is crazy about Guilty Gear XX, and when he's not eating, sleeping, or studying he is playing that game. He told me it was one of the best fighters he had ever played in his life (if not the best), so yesterday I got on Ebay and bought a brand new copy that Moogle found for about $40. I'm counting the days until I get it. My first experiance with a fighting game came one day when I was a very little kid shopping with my parents at Wal Mart. On the way out, I saw an arcade game that I just had to play. I've loved comic books since I was a child, and when I saw a game called "Marvel vs. Capcom" I knew that I could not miss out on that experiance. My dad happened to like super hero's too, so he didnt mind giving me the quarters to play the game. I still remember to this day what characters I picked. I chose Venom, Captain America, and Spider-Man. Needless to say I LOVED the game. I was so infatuated with it that I wanted my parents to actually buy me the arcade machine for Christmas. :D (I was a naive little kid, and I was only like 5 years old.) Then when I was in the 3rd grade, I had my next encounter with a fighting game. One of my friends had a copy of Mortal Kombat for his game boy, and he let me play it one night while we were at the high school for some sort of ceremony for an award we had won for a poster contest. I loved the game, and I begged my parents to get it for me, although I dont remember why I never did get it. Then several years later when I got to high school, my brother and I got Bloody Roar Primal Fury for the GameCube; a game that we still play to this day. It's an ok fighter, but it wasnt so awesome that I loved it as much as Marvel vs. Capcom. After the next generation consoles came out, I played a variety of fighters. I own both super smah bros. games, but I dont really consider them a hardcore fighting game, although I am awesome at it. At a friends house I played such games as Tekken and Soul Calibur II. And now things have came about full circle. A few weeks ago I let a friend of mine borrow Dynasty Warriors 4, and in return I got.....Marvel vs. Capcom 2. I got home and immediatly started to play it. It was like a rush of memories coming back, like my childhood had been immortalized in that disc and in the characters. I had went from a five year old kid, to a junior in high school, the same place I had played Mortal Kombat, and in return I had gotten to play the game I wanted so badly as a child. The day I got to play that game again was the day of atonement for all the days in between. I commenced to choose Captain America, Spider-Man, and Venom, then I commenced to get my ass kicked by the computer. I am now much much better at the game, and can easily beat the computer, but I traded out Captain America for Wolvereine. I dont think Wolveriene is really that great, but I'm awesome with him. He's weak, but incredibly fast. I'm all over the guy clawing him before they know what happened. So right now I'm in the process of becoming awesome at that game, getting good at combo's and such, but I realize that at some point I'll have to let my friend have it back. heh. So then I'll buy it... I'm also considering buying the Street Fighter Anniversary collection, because I think it's only $30 USD. And this year is looking to be an awesome year for fighting games. We have already been given the SF: Anniversary, but here is what we have over that bloodied horizon, if you can dodge that dragon punch in time: 1. Mortal Kombat Deception (PS2, Xbox) 2. Dead or Alive Ultimate (Xbox) (Hot Girls) 3. Guilty Gear Isuka (PS2) 4. Tekken 5 (PS2) 5. King of Fighers: Maximum Impact (PS2) 6. SVC Chaos: SNK vs. Capcom (Xbox) 7. Capcom Fighting Evolution (PS2, Xbox) 8. Iron Phoenix (Xbox) 9. Fight Club (Xbox) 10. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3 (Ps2) GCN owners get screwed, which makes me glad that I also have a Ps2. But it's days like this that make me wish I had an Xbox live and a broadband connection. Online fighting would have to be fun. What are your favorite Fighting games? And which ones have you had the most memorable experiances with? Are you planning on buying any of the games coming out? I personally am looking forward to Mortal Kombat Deception. What's your style of fighting? Do you smash buttons, or take the time to learn the most difficult and articulate combo's until you have completely and utterly mastered a character? |
Re: Fighting Games
Fighting game fanatic=me.
Remember it's not about the combos only......moreso the tactic you use to execute the combos in different situations. I basically am 100% into the KOF series, SF series, MVC series, MK series (stopped recently, but Deadly alliance is pretty good), CVS series. Haven't gone much into GG but i heard it's quite good. I usually challenge KOF @ the arcades against all the asian experts (as I'm not asian it looks pretty funny). But generally i'm classified as one of the best in Sydney @ kof 2002/2003. |
Re: Fighting Games
I'm not too big on the fighting games (one on one... some people consider "beat-em ups" to be fighting games, I enjoy those), which is fun because I own like 5 of them.... Soul Calibur 2, VF4: Evo, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, Capcom Vs. SNk2, MK2, SF2... ok so 6...
My first 'sperience with fighting games was the original SF2 on Genesis, what with playing it at my friend's house, I was big on the fighting games back then... Nowadays though they're too much about memorizing 50 billion moves you'll never use and defeating enemies along an incredibly steep difficulty... increasing... mountain... thing... I'd say Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 is the favorite one I own... Also fun is that it is apparently becoming one of the more valuable PS2 games on the market... For now at least... |
Re: Fighting Games
Soul Caliber!
Fighting games are great for parties |
Re: Fighting Games
Fighting games are simple and fun carnage.
I will never forget my 17 straight wins as Raphael on Soul Caliber II at one of Dylflons parties. Man im cheap with him. But I mean, fighting games are basically bred for parties. Which is why I want the new Mortal Kombat game whenever it comes out. |
Re: Fighting Games
the only fighting game I ever really took the time to try and 'master' is Virtua Fighter 4, by FAR the best 3D fighting game ever made IMO. I played quite a bit of Street Fighter 2 back in the day but I used pretty basic attacks.

What about Tekken 3!?!?!? That was possibly actually one of the best fighting games I have ever played. Hwowrang(sp?) and Jin were my best characters. Yes, Jin was the cheapest in the game, considering he had the "tooth fairy" which you just pressed the triangle button, and he does a reverse uppercut (punching down) and it takes away about 1/4 of your health. Me and my friend Chris would spend like, every weekend playing this game, we bought the game one day, and within a few weeks we had all of the characters, and the highest staus' for each level on every difficulty. Man I want to play that game. |
Re: Fighting Games
I was always good at fighting games.. MVC 1&2, CvsSNK2, and such. I'm a "turtle". I like to block and counter when someone else screws up.
|
Re: Fighting Games
I played VF4: Evolution for three straight months. Best fighting game this generation; hands down. GGXX takes second because of the steeper learning curve.
I like to use quick characters, as I do a lot more combos with ease. Though, when I'm on a bad controller and some things don't register, consider me screwed. I got semi-far in a GGXX tournament, but no farther, because I couldn't possibly get the controller to recognize any overdrives. Ugh. But yeah, that's me. |
Re: Fighting Games
My favorite fighting game was probably the Streets of Rage series for Genesis. Primarily for the co-op factor. Since Streets of Rage is gone, the only fighting game I play now I Super Smash Bros. Melee with my friends. We all knew the moves inside out, so for us, it's more a battle of minds. I bought Soul Calibur 2 but I didn't really like it and never play it. The arena is too small. I guess I got to used to Smash Bros. and the large fighting areas.
|
Re: Fighting Games
I think the first fighting game I ever played was either one of the Virtua Fighters I believe. I wanted to be that ninja guy, but I screwed up and got some other guy.
Or it was a Street Fighter game as Vega. With his cheap move where he is on the ground and he like skids. Well it was cheap then. Right now my favorite would be Soul Calibour 2, Smash Bros. but then again I don't really play many others? One game I remember was awesome. It was for PSone, it was called Erheirgz or something. It was made by square I believe, with Cloud, Tifa, Sephiroth and others. So much fun. |

Question... Were you playing Reload with a converter being used with a PS2 controller, because in January I plan on entering a GGX2 Reload tournement, and it's bring your own converter and controller. Also, which characters do you use? |
Re: Fighting Games
Quote:
Reload? No.. the original PS2 version. I use May and Faust. I'm pretty unstoppable. The only characters I have major troubles against are Axl-Low and Chip Zanuff. |
Re: Fighting Games
Quote:
And what is a "converter"? How much does this "Virtua Figher 4" game that everyone is talking about sell for now days? |
Re: Fighting Games
Quote:
I prefer EVO. Just because.. there's a ton of stuff you can get, and it never gets boring. |
Re: Fighting Games
HOORAY!
So Friday I bought: Guilty Gear X2 Reload (Which = 100x more fair than X2) 2 Controller Converters. IT'S SO SWEET! I love it. Chipp isn't so krappy anymore. Thank you Sammy for upping his defense. |

Yesterday I went out shopping, and went to EB, and while there I bought a few games. I got Xmen legends, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (13 DOLLARS!), and...Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution (also 13 dollars, but no instruction booklet.) So I've been playing Xmen legends a whole lot...and it's a fun game. I enjoy using my telekinisis powers of Jean Grey to throw the bad guys around. I also played Aria of Sorrow all the way home...extremely fun. I played VF4:Evo for about 20 minutes...and I suck at it. The reason I suck is ignorance...I dont know how to play it. I wish it had came with an instruction booklet. I need to download one or something, because I have no clue what I'm doing. The only thing I could do was block my oppenets attack, then punch them a few times. So now I'm off on an online quest to figure out how that game works. |
Re: Fighting Games
Quote:
VF4: Evo comes with one of the most thorough in-game tutorials ever. It's there, but I can't remember exactly where it is. Basically, I beat the game twice over in both difficulties, and I STILL can't do some of the moves covered in the tutorial. It's deep as all hell. I spent a good deal of time in it, so check it out. And yes, it is a hard game. Just make sure you're on beginner mode. |

1. Is it possible to change the controls to the analog stick?! What idiot would make a fighting game and only be able to use the d pad?! I tried going into the control options, but I couldnt find anything to help me. 2. Do you happen to know if there is a top tier in this game? And if so, do you know who they are? Thanks...I'll have more questions later, probably. |
Re: Fighting Games
Quote:
Dude... Analog sucks for fighters. D-Pad = Awesome... If you can't do D-Pad stuff, you have no chance in Guilty Gear. And no, we didn't get le XBox because we have a friend with one, who isn't using it. |
Re: Fighting Games
Quote:
If the d-pad is so awesome and the analog is so bad, than why does every fighting arcade machine ever made have a large joy stick? It's insane trying to do those d, df, f, uf motions with a d-pad. If a D-pad was better, than arcade machines would have been born with a d-pad. |
Re: Fighting Games
Quote:
Because at an arcade its just that. A large stick. Analog is a small thumb rotatey thing. Its easier to use your whole hand than just your thumb. But D-pad is easier, way easier. |
Re: Fighting Games
Quote:
I don't think there is any option to change it. What analog option there is: clicking R3 and L3 together to restage yourself in a tutorial match. I know who isn't top tier. Don't use Lau, Lei Fei, Brad, Jacky, or Kage, because they're all either shallow characters or characters people use a lot. You can use them to start out if you want, but you'll find they aren't as deep as the other fighters. I started with Akira, but he was too hard to master, so I went down a step and went with Pai. Pai suits my quick-thinking, quick combo-performing ways, rather than patience and timing. |
Re: Fighting Games

Hmm... why didn't you use chipp in GGX2? I had to re-learn eddie... It sucked but it's ok... Stupid GG Mode in GGX2 GAH! |

Re: Fighting Games
i'm currently hooked on Streetfighter III: Third Strike. I spend at least 10$ a week playing it in arcade. I use mostly Ken, but i'm trying to master Ibuki.
|
Re: Fighting Games
I usually play SVC Chaos: SNK vs. Capcom...
I own with Kazumi. |
Re: Fighting Games

She's top tier in that game... Ken is pretty close to her though... I hate him, he's so freaking fast, it's like bam bam bam. |
Re: Fighting Games

And I am slowely slipping futher and further into being obsessed with fighting games. I bought Virtua Fighter 4: Evo, GGXX, and now I am seriously considering getting Street Figther Anniversary. If I do get it ($30 dollars at wal mart), I think I'm going to use Ken or Guile. This friend of mine at school (the one who let me borrow Marvel vs. Capcom 2) is going to let me borrow Tekken 4 soon...I cant wait! John, what's a controller converter? I was just playing some GGXX yesterday, and I suddenlys started pondering on this question, and the only thing I could think of is a controller that you plug into the ps2, but it's made like the arcade controls. Is that right? And yes...I finally did recieve the copy of GGXX I ordered off of ebay. I pulled it out of the padded package and took a few moments of silence gazing upon the brand new game. Factory sealed and all. I took care when opening it not to damage the box, then I read through the instruction booklet and familiarized myself with most of the normal concepts. Then I started playing it. I took a little time to just go around and look at all the characters (they all look so cool!), before I selected one. I ended up picking Slayer, mostly because he's a vampire. Well, I must say the game is a bit unusual...I'm currenly training with slayer, trying to master all of his moves. I have one question: What's the boost gauge for? I never really seen myself using it for anything. I'm also having some trouble with Roman Cancels...could someone explain to me in detail how they work? After playing for a while I got on my computer and got a faq/movelist for every character and saved it to a disc and moved it to the old computer in my room. I also took some time to look up the top tier in the game...and low and behold, Slayer is top tier! I was very happy that my favorite character was top tier. Quote:

Re: Fighting Games
Quote:
Awesome. Roman cancels are simple. They're also known as a parry. Just remember you have to have your tension gauge at 50% or else they won't work. Basically, you have to mash 3 buttons at the same time you are hit with an attack by your oponent. Just, you can't use R1/you dust button. This works extremely well in tournament play, because it's usually heated enough to fill your tension gauge easily. Are you having trouble with the combo parts after too? Boost gauge tells you if you can pull off your "focus" move in order to cast your insta-death move on the opponent. This isn't very effective unless you have a lot of tension. Your tension bar will turn into another bar, and that will show you how long you are boosted for. After that, your only worthwhile move is your instadeath move. I never found it competent with May, because the move isn't the normal 653653H. May's is more like 9865398653H, and you have to be RIGHT beside your opponent to boot. Annoying. You only have one chance to perform your insta-death move. After that, you're left with NO bar if it's a miss. Not cool at all. But yes, Slayer is a great character. |
Re: Fighting Games
Quote:
Yeah, the hardest part about the Roman Cancel is getting a combo to follow it. I read that you can use Roman Cancels to create your own combo's...though I havnt got that to work it. It said in the instruction book to use a roman cancel halfway through another attack...but I dont know how this helps me make my own combo's. But then again I read Slayer isnt a good combo character, so maybe that's why. I can take you on a 12 hit air combo joy ride with him, though. :) I just beet story mode with him today, and I'm thinking about mastering a different type of character...of the fast combo variety. Maybe Axl Low or Chipp. |

So I beat story mode with Slayer...and I'm trying to find another character to get good with. I practiced with Axl low for a while...and he's cool. He has extremely good range. And while playing as him I tried my hand at Roman Cancels. I decided to cheat and set L2 = 3 different attack buttons. :\ So a roman cancel isnt too hard anymore. I managed to link 3 moves together that wouldnt normall link. I still havnt decided what character to master. GGXX is the wierdest fighter I've ever played. It doesnt focus very much on combo's...and one of my problems is just understanding what type of figther this is and what it is expecting from me. I also messed around a little with Venom. Wierd wierd wierd. |
Re: Fighting Games
Quote:
You know, you've only played through one story path though. Check the faqs and go through all his paths. I think you can unlock his artwork or something. Yeah, GGXX is totally different from conventional fighters. The closest game to it is KOF, because of the combo system. Aren't you playing VF4:Evo too? |
Re: Fighting Games
Quote:
The wierd thing about GGXX is that the game isnt all about combo's. I mean they are ok, but you are forced not to rely on them, because as the combo goes on, each consecutive hit does less and less damage. Kind of neat. :D I'll post further impressions about my experiances after I've played a little longer. |
Re: Fighting Games
Asian Girl = Pai Mei.
I love Pai Mei. I created her alter ego, "Mmm, Pai." She was wearing a seductive red dress. |

Re: Fighting Games
Well, I just returned home from my 3 night vacation in the Smoky Moutains...and it was pretty cool. Brought me a little closer to nature, I got to shop a lot and buy cool clothes.
But the highlight was just goofing off in the arcade. I played a few rounds of DDR (sadly there wasn't hardly anyone there, so I didnt get to show off), but I DID play a lot of Capcom vs. SNK. They had a machine set up there, and it was only a quarter to play until you lost, and I could play a LONG time on a single quarter, so I spent a good deal of time playing that game. I used Ken, Chun Li, and that green guy that uses lightning...cant remember his name at the moment. I probably would have stayed there playing it all night given the opportunity. On the way home we stopped at a mall...and I bought a new video game: Street Fighter Anniversary Collection. I'm actually getting ready to go pop it in and play it right now in a second. Woohoo! I have bought like 3 fighter games in the last 3 weeks....tee hee. I'll post how much I like it in a little while. |
