Techno

Does anyone know of some actually decent techno out there?

Id say Daft Punk. Brilliant stuff.

I don't know if Techno is the right word, but there is good electronic music out there...

Brian Eno
Aphex Twin
Prefuse 73

A lot of that isn't something you would really dance to though, so I don't know...Daft Punk is good.

Moby is a household name for techno.

Yeah, Daft Punk. I personally like Deavid Soul as well but you can only get their album off of japanfiles.com because it's so obscure. :( Going on that note, both Jet Set Radio soundtracks (plus its spiritual sequel, Ollie King) are amazing. Hideki Naganuma is a genius.

Some people seem to like Fischerspooner, too. I THINK The Flaming Lips qualify, too.

Re: Techno

DJ Tiesto is also a popular choice. He even made a song that was on the soundtrack for one of the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

Re: Techno

yeah...hell yeah. but you might have to stretch your definition of "techno."

my favorite bit big beat producers are The Crystal Method. Both Vegas and Tweekend have big chunky beats with nice bass lines, and both albums are influenced heavily by rock...

On a more trancey side, you might want to check out Infected Mushroom, Astrix, 1200 Micrograms, and Shpongle

Shpongle is effin' awesome....they're kind of like Juno Reactor only much much much better.

I recommend:
Infected Mushroom - I'm The Supervisor
Infected Mushroom - Converting Vegetarians (2 Discs, totally awesome)
Astrix - Eye To Eye
1200 Micrograms - Heroes Of The Imagination
Shpongle - Tales of the Inexpressible

And of course, if you like any of those bands you can dig deeper into their catalogs. I really really recommend Infected Mushroom, when they do trance right it is some of the most transcending stuff you can listen to. Shpongle is also top-notch stuff too, it has all sorts of Latin and Spanish vibes, and it sounds like some primitive tribal stuff.

If you're still not satisfied, I recommend Leftfield. Check out:
Leftfield - Leftism
Leftfield - Rhythm and Stealth

If you want to get out of the techno/trance spectrum and more into melodic music that I guess you could call "techno"...check out Bonobo.

Bonobo - Dial "M" for Monkey (really good album)

There's also this group called Quantic and the Quantic Soul Orchestra. They're in a similar vein to Bonobo and they have a couple really awesome albums.

Quantic Soul Orchestra - Tropidelico
Quantic - Apricot Morning

Both really groovey albums with all sorts of different styles and vibes.

Anyway...you can also go into the DJ stuff and the club mixes, but I find a lot of it to be repetitive and kind of boring after a while. All the above stuff makes rotations in my car, while I'm working out, while I'm doing homework, and just for pure listening sake.

I forgot one of my favorites....

The Propellerheads - Decksandrumsandrockandroll

You probably remember the tune "Spybreak!" from the lobby scene in The Matrix. But the rest of the album is really good.

I know I just listened a bunch of material, so I'll add that my deserted island pick would be "Infected Mushroom - Converting Vegetarians."

Their Matrix Theme is awesome.

I don't know much techno. The Netherlands probably came up with that 15 years ago, it's not very alive here at the moment.

Re: Techno

It's never been alive in the Midwest US. Which is unfortunate.

I always recommend DJ Tiesto and Paul Oakenfold when people ask me. Two of the best.

Some tracks of the top of my head:
DJ Tiesto - Just Be
DJ Tiesto - Adagio for Strings
Paul Oakenfold - Believe (absolutely love the video for this)

I like a lot of Daft Punk, but some of there stuff doesn't sit well with me.

Then people ask me what the difference is between techno, house, electronica, etc genres. I usually just ask them why they want to make the distinction. It's all great music. They usually mix styles up so much that you can never put a track cleanly into one genre. It's all techno to me.

Angrist 05-09-2008 10:33 AM

Re: Techno

I usually call all such genres trance. It also includes the thousands of dance remixes.

Now that we've broadened the genre, I suggest you listen into Sash! Hm, I have about 150 nice trance (/dance/techno/house...) songs, but there's not really 1 artist that has a lot of great songs. If you're interested in the list, gimme a shout.

Re: Techno

that's kind of a broad genre...

as far as happy hardcore:

brixx, dj slipmatt, paulina taylor, bang!, trixxy, Ian Van Dahl

goldfrapp is good dancey sort of music... as are paul oakenfold and moby.
