What determines Roman Numeral sequel-counting?

Ok, say a game comes out, and it's really good. And then the sequel comes out. What factors do you think affect the numbering scheme? In specific, why do you think they went with "Ninja Gaiden II" instead of "Ninja Gaiden 2"?

Is it purely a "me-too" kind of thing, trying to be like Final Fantasy?

I think it's because of the mature and epic theme.

Call of Duty wasn't much of an epic game (story wise) but God of War was, for example.

hmm Turok II or Turok 2?

So, this is why you're heading to the office today?! :D

No, not at Propaganda yet. :( Just website stuff for now.

And it spurred when I saw "Ninja Gaiden II", actually. :lolz: Seriously, do they think Ninja Gaiden is mature?

Using a numbers usually only caters to little kids games - because they won't really know how to read numerals.

Who knows.

Warcraft II, Warcraft III... Those fit because they're set in a medieval setting. But it also looks cool in Starcraft II...

I guess it just stands for mature, serious and maybe epic games. But it's not a guarantee.

Because if Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze can do it, so can they.

Or because they did roman numerals with the original NES Ninja Gaiden trilogy, so they're stickin' with it.

Well, the II in Ninja Gaiden works because the "II" is two blood slashes. It's hardcore.

I think it's just a matter of preference on the side of whoever names it.

A better question is how two games came out after GTA3 and the third game after was GTA4.

Its like the other two never existed....

The same way GTA: London 1969 can come out between GTA and GTA2.

Edit: Actually, even the Playstation version required you to own the original GTA, so it was more of an expansion pack...
But... But even so....
What Jim said... Also, all the actual numbered games have taken place during the present day...

Edit Edit: No... GTA2 supposedly takes place sometime in 2013...

Hm....

Let's just say that the GTA series is special.

Isn't it because all the numbered versions happen in Liberty City?

The very first GTA features all 3 cities from the PS2 trilogy (Liberty, Vice and San Andreas)...

The city is GTA2 doesn't have an official name.

So no...

GTA is just special...
Or, as Jim says, it goes by game engine...
