Sega Pulls All Sports Games from Gamecube

Sega will no longer release its sports games for Nintendo's console.

Sega of America has officially announced that it will no longer produce Sega Sports games for the Nintendo GameCube. The company will instead focus its efforts on bringing sports games to the PlayStation 2 and the Xbox at the start of each season.

"Sega has been evaluating its resources and product lineup to ensure it is bringing the right games to the right platforms as the company builds toward becoming a profitable, independent content publisher," a Sega of America representative said. "After careful examination, Sega has made the strategic decision to support the Nintendo GameCube with a priority on delivering its leading entertainment properties such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Monkey Ball, proven franchises which have been top sellers on the system. Sega will focus its sports development resources on delivering its Sega Sports games to the PlayStation 2 and Xbox on time at the start of each season. Sega is committed to the Nintendo GameCube and will continue to support the platform with its leading entertainment properties, including the recently announced Sonic Adventure DX, as well as many other titles yet to be announced."

This announcement comes on the heels of Sega's recent decision to cancel World Series Baseball 2K3 for the system.

Cant argue with that. Sega Sports kicks the crap out of anything EA can offer. But I knew about this awhile ago.

Yeah, this is pretty old. But this hints at future Sonic's being only(?) on 'Cube.

Sega Sports owns. No more GCN sales? No more GCN profit for Sega. :D

Ermm... correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Sega Sports games sell like crap on NGC? I doubt it was making them a profit :unsure:

I don't blame them... I mean, all people who own a Gamecube mainly buy 1st party titles or exclusives. So it doesn't make a big difference. Byt my friend just bought a Gamecube for the NBA 2K series... I guess he is screwed.

He bought it for a third party series that is on all three platforms (well, 2 now)?!?!! What a RETARD.

I dont blame them either. Yeah 20,000 people might be upset, but you have to do whats profitable. EA has stated a similar thing though I dont think they up and left. Both companies have stated they will put games that are more for the cube audience. Like adventures and platformers, and such...

Yeah... true. I rember they couldn't sell something more than 150,000 copies of any sport title. Development costs were probably more... so yeah they were in for a loss.

EA is dropping most of thier support too.... how sad

6 BIG shops here were I live are stopping their Gamecube sales. Nintendo I think there ain't gonna be another chance here in Europe... Reminds me of the Sega Saturn. (speaking from Europe)
