Quick Question

1) If I had a highspeed connection would my pc have to be on 24/7?

Blackmane 10-07-2003 02:06 PM

Do you mean your computer or your connection?

Because you can turn off your computer anytime you want. Your connection stays on as long as you are connected. So, you could unplug it when your not using it if you are worried about viruses/hackers. Otherwise it will be on whenever your computer is on.

Thank you for responding to my post =-D

Also! If I have two NIC's can my pc be turnned into a router?

Dyne 10-07-2003 06:55 PM

Computer's don't act as routers.. :p You buy yourself a router for that.

while your computer is off you should really worry about viruses or hackers. But you should get a firewall weither software or hardware you need one for an always on connection.. But hardware are better than software firewalls

And most routers have built in firewalls.

Actually they do. and it is quite a good way if done right.

Many big companies or people with huge networks use a computer as a Router/Firewall/Network Hub.

Majority use Linux as that tho. wouldnt trust windows :p

I'm pretty sure you can. Since you can use one ethernet port for incoming internet, and the other for going out to 1 other pc (or an external router, I think).

Yeah, but in a home sense, you'd go out and buy a router.

And a computer can only act as one with the right modifications. You couldn't take, say, a laptop, and hook two computers up to it without the right bits and pieces.
