Chechnya has been part of Russia for nearly a century. The Chechens wanted freedom from the USSR, but when it collapsed in 1991 the Russians made it part of their federation, and not one of the newly formed states.

They proclaimed freedom but Russia ignored them.

It was the Chechens who started this by invading a neighbouring Russian territory called Dagestan.

I don't want to be a smart ass, but.. Chechnya is not in Eastern Europe. It is in the Caucus, which is directly north of Turkey and Iran. Other countries located in the area is Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. If I'm not mistaken it is considered Asia Minor, or Southwest Asia.

Aside from that, a number of the former communist countries in Eastern Europe are slowly recovering (Poland, Czech Republic have already improved a lot since 1991). So even if it was in East Europe, what are you implying?
