Um, to not suck, there are various things you can do to help. You can go into maps by yourself and just get a feel for them, know where all the good weapons are, best places for sniping and etc. Try to find a good dual wield combo, the SMG and the Pistol absolutely owns if used properly. Don't go for the sword or shotgun like every other person does, instead try to pick off the people who do go for them. Remember, people are stupid, no matter how many times they die instantly from trying to grab the sword, they'll still keep going back.
If you just plain suck at gun fights, grab a rifle of some kind and find some good spots to snipe. Also, don't forget that you can melee while holding guns. If someone is running at you shooting and they're all up in ya face, hit B and a few knocks will take them out.
And don't forget to take advantage of vehicles. When I get the banshee I'm usually unstoppable. Me and my boss from AG just took on an entire clan in Waterworks and only lost 100-89, me in the banshee and him sniping.
Basically just practise and sh*t.
