And yeah, until you can master drifting/sparking a lot, you should stay away from heavy characters. However, I have mastered donkey kong. You know in Waluigi's Pinball, the enclosed area before the line? I sparkboost at least 5 times. I jumped 3 positions once due to that one area.
It seems to me all karts go the same top speed. To make it fair. It's always been that way. If you're more experienced, you'll pick the heavier karts - the ones who go much faster when boosting. Otherwise, when you hit offroad/hit by an item, you're incredibly slow to start and can't make up the loss.
