Re: Post-game: Angrist's narrative
Day Three
When the next morning the German, Palmer pointed that he had seen Copper go out into the snow by himself, the professor was quick to add to the suspicion. This was the best way: he helped revealing the creature, while staying out of the spotlight himself. And when Garry pulled the trigger to put the thing out of its misery, he felt a relief: he was safe for a while. But he knew that there were more of them and the knowledge that he couldn't trust anyone was frightening. He had some leads as to who might be infected as well. But it was all suspicion, he had no facts. No observations, no data.
As they walked back inside, they found the other dead person. It was Bennings, with a knife in the throat. His friend Manasecret, the one he thought he could trust. The one who had helped him kill Copper. While everybody stood there, the professor suddenly realised they didn't have a doctor anymore. Nobody to investigate the body, to take initiative. He softly pushed BaBReady aside, and suddenly he realised that their expedition leader was whimpering. As he looked BaBReady in the face, he saw the fear and the tears and thought: This is no creature, this is still a man. A man who protects his team.
As they sat around the table, the discussion started again. Who was infected? Strangler kept making himself suspicious by shouting that he wasn't the alien and by constantly blaming others: “I find it odd that a lot of people jumped on Copper at the last minute. I didn't vote for Copper because I didn't think he was guilty, but the smart play would have been for the other alien to jump in at the last second and pile on an alien who they realize is about to be killed by the mob.” And so Strangler rattled on and on.
If the man was innocent, why couldn't he shut up? Even though Angrist didn't have a good feeling about him, he kept considering the possibility of killing of an innocent man. On the other hand, they had no other lead, and Strangler kept causing terrible uproars. He had voted for professor Angrist a few times, and also today he was blaming him. Angrist didn't fear. He knew he was right.
As he went to bed, he whispered in BaBReady's ear: “I fear for my safety. I could use your protection...”
