 Because it's a pseudo 2D side scroller with occasional jumps back into the 3D plane.
Point being is, Sega is bringing back the ingredient necessary for a truly fun Sonic game. Which is speed within a 2D side scrolling world.
Just because they have the technology and power to make a 3D world for Sonic doesn't mean they should.
That lesson comes to them a few games too late though.
It likes making a 3D tetris or Pacman. And I think they did do a 3D Pacman and I'm sure it flopped.
