I just won my second badge, and learned about secret talents. Maybe because I skipped like 2 generations, but don't remember these.
Like if you put a status on Kadabra, his natural ability also puts the status on his opp which came in handy in the grass gym.
Also, I was so worried about being underpowered, I may have overdone it as I KOed the main Pokemon of the gym leader in one hit.
