Haha wow, for once BaB was way off, he was calling Joker at the #1 spot like two or three nights ago.

I have no explanation other than this. From what I have gathered from watching the Batman movies, watching the TV shows, having limited encounters with the comic book, and talking with Earl, the Joker is this chaotic, unpredictable, psychotic guy who just wants to blow things up, cause chaos, and maybe kill a few people. In some ways the Joker's unpredictable behavior and lack of motives (no wife dying of cancer that he is grieving for, the authorities didn't do him wrong) makes him the ultimate villain. I'm going to go out on a limb and say the Joker has been the thorn in Batman's side since day 1, which is true, Joker was in Batman #1....

Magneto has been with the X-Men from day 1 too. He has evolved into a complex, almost anti-hero like character. He has been an integral part of the X-Men comics as well as the Marvel Universe. He wants to defend mutants and get rid of the humans. His motives are suspect, he doesn't mind killing humans, and he is the Yin to the X-Men's Yang. Not really a nice guy, but definitely complex.

I'm thinking IGN probably went with Magneto because he is perhaps a slightly more complex villain with motives a tad bit more deep than the Joker.

Me personally? Well...this quote from TDK always makes me smile:

Anyway, this whole top100 list is uber stupid. I was griping to BaB. The criteria for this list is weak.

He is pretty iconic, lord knows how many times the stupid Goblin stories have been rewritten. I was hoping to see Apocalypse in the top10, that guys a jerk.
