It's a combination of advertising and the game.
It isn't so much the mass-public labeling Nintendo as being "kiddie." The gamers are doing that. Primarily people who don't like Nintendo (ie. the PS2 and Xbox fans), but still people who are gaming.

Even if PS2 and Xbox fans don't like Nintendo, they're still playing the games occasionally (with friends and the like), and still seeing pictures and movies of the games on the internet and stuff.

The general public didn't actually give Nintendo the kiddie title, it was the people who were already playing and into the games. For Nintendo to be able to gain new customers (adult ones, that is), they're trying to shake the childish image dumped on them by the current gaming population.

People playing video games are seeing what the actual games look like, and until Nintendo changes that, they're going to be stuck with the "kiddie" image. Once the games stop looking so bright and cartoony, gamers will stop calling Nintendo kiddy-ish (or so Nintendo would hope), and that label will drop, which will help Nintendo introduce their stuff to the consumers currently shrugging them off.

The grown-up advertisements might spark a little initial interest, but once people flip over the box and see the cartoony pictures of the game, they'll figure Nintendo is kiddy-ish, and likely pay them no mind.

Based on that, these ads might get people looking their way to some extent, but the ads alone aren't ever going to free Nintendo from the "kiddie" label it's currently stuck with.
