Default SC's top 10 games of this gen: #7

Game #10: Fable
Game #9: Rallisport Challenge 2
Game #8:Super Smash Brothers: Melee

Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando

It's been tried SO many times. Insomniac is one of only two to get it right.

The premise was simple. Take a platformer, and add in a solid 3rd person shooter, but make the shooting the main gameplay dynamic, then give it a bright, vibrant, colorful, warm'n'fuzzy world. Ratchet and Clank did it right on so many levels. The other company to get it right was Rare, and they did it with Jet Force Gemini. Insomniac took it one step further.

The Graphics were fantastic, the controls are spot on. There's a bit of collecting to do, but not so much it drives you mad. The story is peppered with Sci Fi and pop culture references that only make sense to a more mature audience, but the "Save the world, get the girl" motif is simple enough to please even the youngest of gamers.

While all this would make for a decent game, it's Ratchet's gameplay that puts it above and beyond everything else. Oh sure, you get to blow up a LOT of stuff, and there's nothing wrong with that. You also get to fly, race, solve lots of different types of puzzles. You get to play as Clank, which adds an entirely new gameplay mechanic. The entire game has RPG elements which allow you to level Ratchet and his weapons.

I think the best single word to describe this series is "solid." Everything it does, everything it's tried, everything it hopes to be, is done really, really well. There's not a single half-assed part of R&C. Pardon the cliché, but it's a game for gamers.

I've not yet played R&C Deadlocked, but of the first 3 games, Going Commando is my favorite. You could easily make an argument for Up Your Arsenal to be here at #7, but I prefer Going Commando. So, so, so much fun. You could now buy all 4 games in the series for $100. If you've never tried it, try out GC or UYA, you can thank me later.
