Ok excuse me on this one just a little drunk when replying.
But you don't see anyone acknowledging Mario Kart, Tennis, Baseball, Soccer or whatever have you as the best Mario game.
My feeling is that the best Mario games has to stay true to all its roots which means being a platformer... granted some will say puzzle like Donkey Kong since that is where Mario made his debut but he became famous with the platformer.
And to say something like Mario RPG or any of the MArio RPGes games are better games than the original Mario Bros orr Super Mario Bros 3 or Super Mario World or even Super Mario 64 ... to me is a slap in the face to the talented people who created the franchise.

So then what about Mario Kart? Is that a racing game that just so happens to have Mario Characters in it? What about Super Mario Strikers, Mario Tennis, Mario Baseball? Are those just sports games that happen to have Mario Characters in it? What about all the Mario Party games?

I think there are major differences.
For the most part, I really don't know what SMRPG kept from the games. It created a new universe, new characters who didn't fit any pre-designed mold and well... introduced gameplay that isn't all Mario inspired.
I think atleast for the most part, the other games you mention.. besides soccer to a degree.. takes the Mario universe and fits it into its respective games...
I mena you won't find banana peels and red shellls in other racing games or Tennis games.

Who is to say what does and doesnt fit? It's a god damn fictional existance. In my eyes, a talking Marshmallow with arms fits into any Mario game about as much as a turtle wearing a helmet who rides a cloud does.

While that is true to a degree, I don't see a marshmallow man fitting into the universe, the same way I don't like th big Hawaiin guys from Super Mario Sunshine, but I guess its all subjective.

Yes, he obviosly was. Or else they wouldnt have made 3 (to my knowledge) Mario RPG-like games.

Yet there are 7 platformers, I wonder what genre he was meant to be in....

A Mario game doesnt need platforming to be good. We're out of the 2D era here. Sidescrolling is over. Platforming can still be used, but it's not the basis of a game anymore. I revert back to my "What about any other Mario game" speech. Show me the platforming in Super Mario Strikers please.
|
I think once you don't have platforming in a Mario game it automatically disqualifies it from being the best Mario game ever.
Its like dubbing a platforming Final Fantasy the best one yet.
And again, there is a difference between using a universe which all the Mario sports games do and making a Mario game like the Mario RPGs are in my opinion.

And have you thought that with Super Mario RPG, they wanted to make a "traditional" RPG? And to be fair, there actually is a certain degree of platforming in Super Mario RPG.
|
There is no doubt in my mind they wanted to make a traditional RPG with SMRPG, and that is my main beef with the game.
I mean I assume that most of you who like SMRPGs more than the others are more RPG fans than Mario fans which is probably why you prefer it.

Yeah, in the sense that it can't ever be copied. The Paper Marios attempted and didn't make it - although they're still good games.

To be fair, I believe the people behind the Paper Mario games looked at SMRPG as a basis for their games.
But after that, they took whatever was in SMRPG and made it their own and then improved upon it.
I mean as far as gameplay goes, what does SMRPG have over the Paper Mario games?
