Yeah...you gotta hate that "bam bam bam"

And I am slowely slipping futher and further into being obsessed with fighting games. I bought Virtua Fighter 4: Evo, GGXX, and now I am seriously considering getting Street Figther Anniversary. If I do get it ($30 dollars at wal mart), I think I'm going to use Ken or Guile. This friend of mine at school (the one who let me borrow Marvel vs. Capcom 2) is going to let me borrow Tekken 4 soon...I cant wait!

John, what's a controller converter? I was just playing some GGXX yesterday, and I suddenlys started pondering on this question, and the only thing I could think of is a controller that you plug into the ps2, but it's made like the arcade controls. Is that right?

And yes...I finally did recieve the copy of GGXX I ordered off of ebay. I pulled it out of the padded package and took a few moments of silence gazing upon the brand new game. Factory sealed and all. I took care when opening it not to damage the box, then I read through the instruction booklet and familiarized myself with most of the normal concepts. Then I started playing it. I took a little time to just go around and look at all the characters (they all look so cool!), before I selected one. I ended up picking Slayer, mostly because he's a vampire.

Well, I must say the game is a bit unusual...I'm currenly training with slayer, trying to master all of his moves. I have one question: What's the boost gauge for? I never really seen myself using it for anything.

I'm also having some trouble with Roman Cancels...could someone explain to me in detail how they work?

After playing for a while I got on my computer and got a faq/movelist for every character and saved it to a disc and moved it to the old computer in my room. I also took some time to look up the top tier in the game...and low and behold, Slayer is top tier! I was very happy that my favorite character was top tier.

BUTTON MASHERS, HOOOOO!!!

button masher ho.

haha
Which fighter game? And button mashers annoy me. -_- My brother is one, and he sometimes can beat me when I actually know what I'm doing. But I've found the best way to beat a button smasher: patience. When my brother goes into button mash mode, I block every attack he throws (I am an excellent blocker...and I pride myself in it. I can block high and low and back again in the blink of an eye), and while blocking I just wait for an opening to appear, then I wail on him.

Awesome.

Roman cancels are simple. They're also known as a parry. Just remember you have to have your tension gauge at 50% or else they won't work. Basically, you have to mash 3 buttons at the same time you are hit with an attack by your oponent. Just, you can't use R1/you dust button. This works extremely well in tournament play, because it's usually heated enough to fill your tension gauge easily. Are you having trouble with the combo parts after too?

Boost gauge tells you if you can pull off your "focus" move in order to cast your insta-death move on the opponent. This isn't very effective unless you have a lot of tension. Your tension bar will turn into another bar, and that will show you how long you are boosted for. After that, your only worthwhile move is your instadeath move. I never found it competent with May, because the move isn't the normal 653653H. May's is more like 9865398653H, and you have to be RIGHT beside your opponent to boot. Annoying.

You only have one chance to perform your insta-death move. After that, you're left with NO bar if it's a miss. Not cool at all.

But yes, Slayer is a great character.

Yeah, the hardest part about the Roman Cancel is getting a combo to follow it. I read that you can use Roman Cancels to create your own combo's...though I havnt got that to work it. It said in the instruction book to use a roman cancel halfway through another attack...but I dont know how this helps me make my own combo's.

But then again I read Slayer isnt a good combo character, so maybe that's why.

I can take you on a 12 hit air combo joy ride with him, though. I just beet story mode with him today, and I'm thinking about mastering a different type of character...of the fast combo variety. Maybe Axl Low or Chipp.

I think if you can reach 29, something cool will happen. o_O

So I beat story mode with Slayer...and I'm trying to find another character to get good with. I practiced with Axl low for a while...and he's cool. He has extremely good range. And while playing as him I tried my hand at Roman Cancels. I decided to cheat and set L2 = 3 different attack buttons. :\

So a roman cancel isnt too hard anymore. I managed to link 3 moves together that wouldnt normall link. I still havnt decided what character to master. GGXX is the wierdest fighter I've ever played. It doesnt focus very much on combo's...and one of my problems is just understanding what type of figther this is and what it is expecting from me.

I also messed around a little with Venom. Wierd wierd wierd.

You know, you've only played through one story path though. Check the faqs and go through all his paths. I think you can unlock his artwork or something.

Yeah, GGXX is totally different from conventional fighters. The closest game to it is KOF, because of the combo system.

Aren't you playing VF4:Evo too?

Yeah, I've been playing through the story mode thing on VF4:Evo with Kage (that was before you said he was over used). I started trying to be good with Alex after you mentioned that, though there was one of the Asian girls I also like using. VF4 is an awesome fighter...I love how it goes back to the old hands and feet era...no fireballs or super duper special moves...just good fighting. But since I got GGXX I've been playing it the most (hard not to play a new game), and I have taken a great liking to Venom...cool character, interesting fighting style. Not to mention I love pool. :\

The wierd thing about GGXX is that the game isnt all about combo's. I mean they are ok, but you are forced not to rely on them, because as the combo goes on, each consecutive hit does less and less damage. Kind of neat.

I'll post further impressions about my experiances after I've played a little longer.

Asian Girl = Pai Mei.

I love Pai Mei. I created her alter ego, "Mmm, Pai." She was wearing a seductive red dress.

Well, I just returned home from my 3 night vacation in the Smoky Moutains...and it was pretty cool. Brought me a little closer to nature, I got to shop a lot and buy cool clothes.

But the highlight was just goofing off in the arcade. I played a few rounds of DDR (sadly there wasn't hardly anyone there, so I didnt get to show off), but I DID play a lot of Capcom vs. SNK. They had a machine set up there, and it was only a quarter to play until you lost, and I could play a LONG time on a single quarter, so I spent a good deal of time playing that game. I used Ken, Chun Li, and that green guy that uses lightning...cant remember his name at the moment.

I probably would have stayed there playing it all night given the opportunity.

On the way home we stopped at a mall...and I bought a new video game: Street Fighter Anniversary Collection. I'm actually getting ready to go pop it in and play it right now in a second. Woohoo! I have bought like 3 fighter games in the last 3 weeks....tee hee.

I'll post how much I like it in a little while.

Ah yes, Blanka!

Well, I've been playing Street Fighter Anniversary....and I only have a couple of complaints.

1. I wish Alpha Strike had been included.

2. I wish third strike had more classic Street Fighter characters in it, like Blanka and Guile.

Out of the games on the disc, I have been playing third strike the most, and have been honning my skills with Ken. Incidentally my brother uses Ryu. I can ususally beat him, and from my experiance I have come to conclude that Ken must be a higher tier than Ryu, as crazy as it sounds.

I tried my hand at Arcade mode this morning...I got my ass handed to me by Dudley. I guess this means I must train harder...and I'd like to learn to be able to Parry better. I can say that this will probably be the last fighting game that I purchase in a while, unless I break down and get MKeception. I have so many fighters now to keep me busy for a very long time, and any further purchasing I do will be directed at a different genre, more than likely adventure and platforming.

Remy = Guile

All the Characters in that game are basically better versions of Street Fighter II characters.

Uhm... Man I can't think of his name but there is even a combination of Dhalsim and Blanka.

Akuma is my favorite of the 3 that play like Ryu.

He doesn't have EX moves but he has secret Supers and a nice 3 hit fireball. The Air Fireball is nice also.

I play Chun-Li.

I challenge you to a fighting game extravaganza the next time we are in the same location with the appropriate facilities!

I've actually been using Ken a whole lot, though I did experiment a little with Akuma, I ultimatly preferred Ken. I'm going to try out Remy though, since you say he is like Guile. I have also been playing around in Street Fighter II...I just wish that the health meters were larger. Matches dont last long enough.

And I think that the Blanka/Dhalsim might be Twelve or Necro, but I can't really remember.

Out of all my fighters, I've been playing Guilty Gear X2 the most recently...story mode is just so addicting. I just keep playing and playing different characters to see what all their endings are. But a result of me playing with all the characters is that I cant decide which one I like the most and want to master. :O

I thought I was Axl all the way, but I've recently discovered the joys of Eddie, Faust, and Millia Rage.

Millia is stupid. She's button mash central. I like Eddie a lot. I hate faust.

Not this weekend (because of the tournament) but maybe next I can come back home and we can spend the night at Josh's house? Like a Saturday night? That would be cool. Oh by the way, you should leave your PS2 on for 200 hours with GGXX on. It unlocks everything because the mission modes are super hard...
