Ya know why? The team is 6-6 and blew a 10 point lead within the last 2 minutes to the hapless 5-7 Cowboys...That's why nobody wants to talk about Seattle...

Phf.
Says you.
Though 6-6, they are tied for 1st in the NFC West my friend.
*Looks at the other teams in the NFC West in Detail*

Re: The NFL thread 2004-2005
Marvin Harrison signs 7 year extension worth $67 mill...Colts GM Bill Polian made a nice move by arranging a roster bonus which will only have Marvin count $3.2 mill against the cap next year, making room for the signing of Edgerrin James, among other players.
Which makes it official: Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison will go down as the best QB>WR combo ever.

Uhh, they're about 4 Superbowls behind Montana/Rice.
Slow your roll man, slow you're roll, they're not that good yet.

Montana and Rice were on a better team...
As far as QB>WR hookups are concerned, Manning and Harrison own the completion record (imagine what it'll be like in 5 years), and are closing in on the yardage and TD records (which will be forgotten in 5 years).
They'll win a Superbowl or 2...the late 80's 49ers > present day Colts...but Manning > Harrison will go down as the most prolific hookup in history.

Re: The NFL thread 2004-2005
Stu, its all about the bowls. You can say that Rice and Montana were on a better team all you like, but to that all you have to say is...
4 Superbowl Rings.
Until Harrison and Manning get at LEAST 2, I wouldn't even start debating this.

Re: The NFL thread 2004-2005
Stu, we're not talking about one Superbowl powered by a killer defense... we're talking about a dynasty that won superbowls, broke records, etc.
Manning/Harrison can be as good as there is, but they'll never be looked at the same way as Rice/Montana until they get a little ice on their fingers. You know this.

And with the Colt's lackluster defense, it'll be at least another season before we see them in the Superbowl.

Re: The NFL thread 2004-2005
you can say that about 29 teams. which 2 teams WILL be in the Superbowl? The Colts have a shot, they're on fire
oh, and their defense isnt as bad as everyone thinks. Number one in the league in takeaways, best turnover differential in the NFL, most forced fumbles and fumble recoveries. they give up a lot of yards, but that's because teams have to air the ball out from the 2nd quarter on

Re: The NFL thread 2004-2005
Bill Simmons always makes good points.

Colts (-10) over TEXANS
All right ...
People keep asking me why I have a grudge against Peyton Manning. Not true. I just feel like we make a mistake -- not just the media, but fans, too -- of placing too much emphasis on statistics and not enough emphasis on actual success. Certain superstars have a knack for coming through when it doesn't matter: guys like Karl Malone, A-Rod, Bonds, C-Webb, Manning, even Donovan McNabb. I would rather see us celebrating the players and teams that come through when it matters.
To me, the best example of this argument was always "Emmitt vs. Barry." Whenever people argued that Barry Sanders was better than Emmitt Smith, my head would practically explode. So you'd rather have the guy who gets tackled behind the line of scrimmage eight out of 10 times, then breaks off a 40-yard run, over the guy who rushes for five yards a pop, keeps moving those chains and gets stronger as the game goes along? You really think the Cowboys were winning those Super Bowls because of Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin? Emmitt was the heart and soul of those teams. I loved watching Barry Sanders, and he's in the Pantheon for "Guys You Should Never Bet Against," but for one game with my life on the line ... sorry, I'm taking Emmitt. No contest.
Anyway, here's the bottom line: Manning and the Colts had a chance to beat the Patriots three times over the past 13 months ... and they couldn't do it. After Week 8, they were 4-3 and everyone was saying "same old Colts." They barely held off the Moss-less Vikings at home on a Monday night, then exploded for 182 points against Houston, Chicago, Detroit and Tennessee (four subpar teams by all accounts). Now we're supposed to think they can beat Pittsburgh and New England in January -- on the road, in back-to-back games -- just because they've been rolling up the score against crummy teams? Please.
Is Manning having a remarkable statistical season, even when you throw in the relaxed pass defense rules that have bumped up everyone's stats? No question about it. I'm just more impressed with stats like "Ben Roethlisberger is 10-0 as an NFL starter" and "Tom Brady is 51-13 as a starter and 7-0 in overtime games" than "Manning has thrown 62 TDs in a single season." Let's see him play like this when it truly matters. That's all I'm saying.

Re: The NFL thread 2004-2005
um...nobody is expecting the Colts to beat the Pats and Steelers on the road back-to-back. he created his own angle to make himself look like a genius...
Colts would be underdogs in both cases...
oh, and he does have a grudge against Manning.
"ive had it with this guy. making his O-Lineman sit in their 3 point stance for 40 seconds every play. I bet they all wanna throw their hairdryers into his cold tub after each game. him breaking marino's record would be just as bad as Bonds with his 8 and a half inch head breaking Aaron's record"
all while Peyton feels uncomfortable talking about individual statistics after each game
no grudge there
