I think its more to do with the first one being so good, and then the new developer (Obsidian) making the second one not even close to the standards of KoToR.

Just to be fair, Obsidian was really rushed by LucasArts to release the game by the holiday season. They had planned for a lot more few more worlds and a better explained ending. I blame LucasArts for KotORII, not Obsidian.
