Default The DS, me, and why it might appeal to the mass market

Welp, my bro and I got a Nintendo DS for Christmas. I will say, the touch screen takes some getting used to. We got Super Mario 64 DS along with it, and I still havent quite adjusted to playing it without analog control...and the thumb pad option I might have to play around with more later, it just seemed to akward at first. Anywho, the real reason I made this thread was to talk about my cousin and his girlfriend who got to try it out on Christmas with us. My cousin is 27 and his GF is probably around the same age...he started playing around with Mario, and was really impressed with the graphics...I remember I was sitting next to him while he played, and I remember him muttering under his breath "Wow" seveal times...he then played the Metroid Hunters demo for awhile, and was so impressed he showed it to his girlfriend, who was hooked instantly. She was talking about how the reason she dosent like Halo 2 is because she can never get the aiming quite right, and said something along the lines of this way it is much easier, more along the lines of a PC mouse. Anyways, she played that demo nonstop for at least 40 minutes. The moral of this story is, I now see the DS as something that actually could appeal to people that might not ordinaly play videogames. Nintendo was talking about this, and now I honestly see it. Opens up a lot of new possibiliteis.

Yea, I think that alot of people not normally into gaming might be appealed by the touch screen. That is only as long as Nintendo keeps things from getting too complicated control wise which frustrates newbies.

I really hope the thing actually works out and the touch screen can do more than just be a nice gimmick. It has the possibility of being the next revolution for gaming, if it isn't messed up.

Yeah, its interesting to see how it can be used with the touch screen. I've only got to mess around with the MP demo and it takes a few minutes to get used to the controls but its not too hard once you figure it out. The control method won't replace ol' fashioned PC FPS's controls but its still very nice.

I don't know......I personally think the DS touch screen is great, but I still am having trouble getting used to it in Metroid. Maybe it's just me, but I don't know. I got used to Halo's controls really fast, my biggest complaint was that you couldn't turn around very fast - and that complaint is still valid on the DS.

I love my new DS. I tried Metroid to see how I'd fare, and I got used to the control within 10 seconds. Even the platforming elements weren't hard at all. I was double-tapping for jumping like it was second nature.

P.S. Feel the Magic XY/XX is AWESOME.

Ridge Racer is the game to play, its a much better racing game than Asphalt Urban, but then again I have both, LOL!

Yes, the DS is appealing to the older/mature audience, like 20-40 in age as well as women.

Why? Cause it's easy to play with DS, the touch screen alleviates the pain and stresses of buttons and creates a natural aura of gaming to be fun and simplistic.

I mean common, how much simple can it get? Touch with a pen or finger.

Feel the Magic is one interesting game...VERY interesting. It takes advantage of all things with the DS (touch screen, mic, dual screens). It's a little short but I hope a sequel comes in a year or 2 with alot more games.

Yeah I had my speculations about the DS, but I went over Dark-Samurai's house and played RIDGE RACER on it, and it's pretty fun....

Although I can't really agree that the touch-screen alone will bring non-gamers... only because my generalization of non-gamers are people who never played any games... so they wouldn't really be excited about the touch-screen. However... the DS COULD bring existing gamers that don't like nintendo, into their world.

Like I said... I was skeptical but I played one game on the DS and was thoroughly impressed.... and it hurts to say that cuz I'm a Sony fan... LOL

I think the controls are pretty streamlined, but the two-screen thing still gets me.
