DK64 was the first game that needed it. Rogue Squadron came out before DK64 and was capable of using it.
I remember because I got RS for Christmas the year it came out and wanted the Expansion Pack but we couldn't find it. But when DK64 came out later I bought it (and the Expansion Pack with it of course) and then used it for Rogue Squadron.
