Here's the difference (About grand theft auto):

Grand theft Auto was set in 97ish, since that is the release, and no prior statement as to year was given.

Grand theft Auto 2 was set sometime before 2000, yet after 97. Because there is a radio station where the host would make comments about the millenium coming, etc etc. So it was not 2013, or 2009 as people have just - for whatever reason - assumed.

Grand Theft Auto 3, was set in early 2000/2001.

Vice City, and San Andreas, were set in 1986, and 1992, respectively, and do not follow a linear timeline.

Grand theft Auto 4, takes place in 2007/2008 - as to carry on the "future movement" of the game, thusly getting a number, and not a name.

So timeline wise it is:

GTA: London
GTA: Vice City
GTA: San Andreas
Grand Theft Auto
GTA II
GTA III
GTA IV

The in-game radio stations say the millenium is coming, yet Rockstar itself created a little fake journal promotion dealie for the game that features entries dated from the year 2013...

*ponders*

But yes, every game with the possible exception of GTA2 (depending on if you want to believe the game itself, or the game's official promotional material) takes place at present day, in respect to each games' release date.

And each game with an official number rang in a new game engine for the series.

So it could be either or or neither or nothing or nonsense.

What about other games with roman numerals? They're such fascinating figures... Why do we even use them at all anymore? *ponders*

Because they look cooler and more dignified than our numbers?

It's called Resident Evil syndrome. Unfortunately, there is no cure.
