I'm glad its "basic" in terms of combat. I can't see Nintendo making a really deep Mario RPG thats similar to an FF game.

I agree, and again, I'm not saying basic is bad or anything, it suits this game just fine.

True. It doesn't need to have you remember 50 things. Mario games always need to have some kind of simple factor because thats the reason I come back to play any mario game over and over is because I can just jump in when I want. But maybe someday Ninty will make some kind of really deep Mario game to satisfy the hardcore gamers. Maybe a MMO mario game for the N5?

Yes. And its a helluva lot more fun. (not that all other turn based combat is bad, Grandia 2 comes to mind as one I really enjoyed)

The standard turned based combat in rpgs these days is nearly 10 times deeper than this combat. I'm not dregading the game or anything, don't take me wrong, it's a really fun game, but I knows me RPGs and this one is basic in terms of combat.
I've played 100% of all three. Several times (twice for Superstar Saga). And yes, I do think it is an evolution. It's an evolution from the basic principals of turn-based combat. While all turn-based combat systems stem from a particular route, most of them have evolved in a singular direction. They all start at "A", but most of them went to "B". However, Nintendo went to "C". While "C" hasn't been developed to the extent that "B" has, I still prefer the basic principals that "C" offers in place of "B".

Like what you want. I like what Nintendo's done with turn-based combat and I can hardly wait to see what they do to further its development.

Nintendo hasn't done anything with turned based combat. Square Soft developed Mario RPG which was the first to incorporate the "evolution" you speak of. How has that combat evolved since then? Paper Mario follows the same basic principles, and M&L is nearly identicle.

Like I said, Nintendo hasn't done anything drastically new, they do what they always do: find something their fans like and repeat it as many times as possible.

Further what development? The addition of a button press, a development they did not even make in the first place? Interactivity during turned based gameplay is not anything new, it is featured in many RPGs, and they involve much more than pressing a button at the appropriate time.

It is basic turned based combat, not by matter of opinion. And let me make myself clear once again: I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THIS. I do like the game, I like all the Mario RPG games, and this form of combat is on no hindrance to me. The problem I have is the comparison being made that all other RPGs are pale when confronted with these games.

I don't think the comparison being said by you makes other RPG's pale. I know what you mean. (But good on clarifying for some other peoples)

In the woods, where you have to collect the 3 colored things, there is a large koopa looking guy blocking my way, that says something like "Nothing can knock me down...I think". How do I get past him? Nothing seems to work...I hit him with my hammer from the sides, I cant hit him from the front because it initates a conversation...

Yesterday, I figured out how to knock down the big koopa guys.

*SMALL SPOILER*

You can't knock them down with the hammer

*End small spoiler*

I think where you are, you can't knock them down yet...but after you learn a few more techniques, you can knock them down.

Indeed. You will learn a technique. It will be obvious when you learn the right one.

Exactly how long is this game anyway? I think I'm closer to being finished than I thought.

How long have you been playing? Where are you at?

I beat it in about 11 hours (although, that timer could be off because I left the game running by accident a couple times).

Damn! I tried looking for this game a couple of days ago, but they were all out, everywhere. I got Golden Sun 2 instead.

But still, man. Must be popular.
