And yes...I finally did recieve the copy of GGXX I ordered off of ebay. I pulled it out of the padded package and took a few moments of silence gazing upon the brand new game. Factory sealed and all. I took care when opening it not to damage the box, then I read through the instruction booklet and familiarized myself with most of the normal concepts. Then I started playing it. I took a little time to just go around and look at all the characters (they all look so cool!), before I selected one. I ended up picking Slayer, mostly because he's a vampire.
Well, I must say the game is a bit unusual...I'm currenly training with slayer, trying to master all of his moves. I have one question: What's the boost gauge for? I never really seen myself using it for anything.
I'm also having some trouble with Roman Cancels...could someone explain to me in detail how they work?

Awesome.
Roman cancels are simple. They're also known as a parry. Just remember you have to have your tension gauge at 50% or else they won't work. Basically, you have to mash 3 buttons at the same time you are hit with an attack by your oponent. Just, you can't use R1/you dust button. This works extremely well in tournament play, because it's usually heated enough to fill your tension gauge easily. Are you having trouble with the combo parts after too?
Boost gauge tells you if you can pull off your "focus" move in order to cast your insta-death move on the opponent. This isn't very effective unless you have a lot of tension. Your tension bar will turn into another bar, and that will show you how long you are boosted for. After that, your only worthwhile move is your instadeath move. I never found it competent with May, because the move isn't the normal 653653H. May's is more like 9865398653H, and you have to be RIGHT beside your opponent to boot. Annoying.
You only have one chance to perform your insta-death move. After that, you're left with NO bar if it's a miss. Not cool at all.
But yes, Slayer is a great character.

Yeah, the hardest part about the Roman Cancel is getting a combo to follow it. I read that you can use Roman Cancels to create your own combo's...though I havnt got that to work it. It said in the instruction book to use a roman cancel halfway through another attack...but I dont know how this helps me make my own combo's.
But then again I read Slayer isnt a good combo character, so maybe that's why.
I can take you on a 12 hit air combo joy ride with him, though. I just beet story mode with him today, and I'm thinking about mastering a different type of character...of the fast combo variety. Maybe Axl Low or Chipp.

I think if you can reach 29, something cool will happen. o_O
So I beat story mode with Slayer...and I'm trying to find another character to get good with. I practiced with Axl low for a while...and he's cool. He has extremely good range. And while playing as him I tried my hand at Roman Cancels. I decided to cheat and set L2 = 3 different attack buttons. :\
So a roman cancel isnt too hard anymore. I managed to link 3 moves together that wouldnt normall link. I still havnt decided what character to master. GGXX is the wierdest fighter I've ever played. It doesnt focus very much on combo's...and one of my problems is just understanding what type of figther this is and what it is expecting from me.
I also messed around a little with Venom. Wierd wierd wierd.

You know, you've only played through one story path though. Check the faqs and go through all his paths. I think you can unlock his artwork or something.
Yeah, GGXX is totally different from conventional fighters. The closest game to it is KOF, because of the combo system.
Aren't you playing VF4:Evo too?

Yeah, I've been playing through the story mode thing on VF4:Evo with Kage (that was before you said he was over used). I started trying to be good with Alex after you mentioned that, though there was one of the Asian girls I also like using. VF4 is an awesome fighter...I love how it goes back to the old hands and feet era...no fireballs or super duper special moves...just good fighting. But since I got GGXX I've been playing it the most (hard not to play a new game), and I have taken a great liking to Venom...cool character, interesting fighting style. Not to mention I love pool. :\
The wierd thing about GGXX is that the game isnt all about combo's. I mean they are ok, but you are forced not to rely on them, because as the combo goes on, each consecutive hit does less and less damage. Kind of neat.
I'll post further impressions about my experiances after I've played a little longer.

Re: Fighting Games
Asian Girl = Pai Mei.
I love Pai Mei. I created her alter ego, "Mmm, Pai." She was wearing a seductive red dress.
