Well I just read that Mech Assault aactually takes place in the Mech Warrior Universe (aka "Battle Tech", never knew thats what its called) but it will be much more console friendly than the Mech Warrior games, meaning that there won't be so many engineering options or need for a degree in therno-dynamics to play the game (actually, I like that aspect of the Mech Warrior games)
Also, IGN said that it will be a kind of mix of Mech Warrior aand Mech Commander in a way. I'm kind of eager to check this one out
