It's kind of been interesting to follow. Bush clearly nominated her in the hopes that his base would trust him and let her sail through the confirmation. I guess he was going for John Roberts 2.0, but then the right wing blew up. Personally, if I were dead set on overturning Roe v. Wade, I might have been reassured by all the hints that she's an Evangelical Christian and everything, but then again, since she was such an intellectual lightweight, it's doubtful that she could have swayed the rest of the Court in any way.

Oh well. Now she's gone and hopefully Bush will have better sense to nominate a crony. The last thing he needs is to remind people that he once made Michael Brown as the head of FEMA. His next choice absolutely cannot smack of nepotism. And now he's in a tight spot because he has to satisfy both his base and the Democrats who have signaled that they are willing to stall a nomination if the candidate resembles Scalia too much. Whoever Bush picks surely will be a better candidate than Miers, though, and I think that person should have gotten the nomination to begin with anyway. Miers has managed to weaken Bush's support on the ring which is normally impossible.

Interestingly, some are saying that the next nominee won't be a woman and may not even be a minority since the Miers nomination basically served as the Bush administration's "gesture" to feminism.
