Opening your consoles isn't just useful, it's fun too. My brother once spilled a glass of lemonade over our N64. We bought a new one, but we opened up the broken one after half a year. We cleaned it and it worked again.
Oh and I was always taking apart controllers (NES, SNES, N64), just to see how they worked, sometimes to fix them.
I'd give it a try, unless returning the Box to England isn't that expensive...
