Its up to 2 players online and off on one console. So yes you can bring a guest on and play online with other people, id assume system link would work like that as well.

I know it is a part of the game, but wish you could turn off friendly fire on some encounters.
Only so often, i could run in front of Combine's gun.

Generally if I'm in front I leave crouch toggled. It cuts down on friendly fire deaths by quite a bit.
