I think that I would recommend being a heavy weight so that you can carry more big weapons and have more fun. I found myself wanting to do more damage than I was doing, even with 100 skill in small weapons.

Oh, and I would recommend not getting the Mysterious Stranger perk. He showed up for me like three times over the last half of the game.
